High IQ in Children Linked to Drug Use Later in Life

Having a high IQ may have its drawbacks: a new study finds that highly intelligent children are more likely to try illegal drugs in their teenage and adult years. The work is published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. [James White and G. David Batty, "Intelligence across childhood in relation to illegal drug use in adulthood: 1970 British Cohort Study"]

An ongoing study that started in 1970 gathered data from 8,000 people, including their IQ test scores at ages five and 10. Participants later reported their history of illicit drug use at age 16, and then again at age 30.

Men with high childhood IQs were 50 percent more likely to use drugs than their low-scoring counterparts. And women with high scores were more than twice as likely to have tried controlled substances.

What draws children with high IQs to eventually try drugs? The study?s authors point out that drugs could serve as a coping mechanism for intelligent children who stand out from their classmates and become targets for teasing. In addition, intelligent people tend to pursue new, stimulating experiences to stave off boredom. Meaning that an IQ being high could be a gateway to getting high.

Maybe I missed it, but does it define what a high IQ is?

Either way, makes a lot of sense to me.

Or high intelligence is often a precursor to one developing cynicism that destroys the happy illusion that most people live their lives in, revealing the world to be not much more than a big pile of dung. Drugs and alcohol help the highly intelligent re-experience this illusion so they can continue to interact with the rest of society.

Why do they keep calling it "childhood IQ" -- your IQ doesn't change throughout your life.

... until you smoke about a hundred pounds of weed. Seriously I'm pretty sure I've gotten dumber, and the fact that my teenage years looked like a Cheech and Chong movie probably had something to do with that. Read some if my posts. Do you think I'm still a 186? That's the range I was as a kid and in my twenties.

Getting back to the main point of the thread, it seemed to me that public school curriculum was geared to the slowest kid in class. As a major geek, I was bored to tears. Alcohol and weed made it a little more tolerable to be in eighth grade reviewing stuff that was taught in fourth grade.

After ninth grade I said "fuck this" and went to college, but even then the first couple semesters of college, basically a review of high school, were more challenging when I was too stoned to know what classes I had that day. Unfortunately somewhere along the way I got too stoned to show up for a few years.

Actually some recent studies mentioned in the Wall Street journal contradict this. Saying in some instances a person who had a verbal IQ of 105 after several years of reading (school and whatever) scored 123. The brain is just like a muscle.

I think GFY just reinforces or aggravates symptoms like ADD (I swear to god!) but I still learn a lot of things in a different sort of way.

Sucks to be you, you were 1 point below Bobby Fischer (chess prodigy 187).

I'd like to give you my condolences for putting governors on yourself (drugs and alcohol) and give your lesser peers a fighting chance in the school system and ultimately make them feel better about themselves by graduating ahead of you

So I did a bunch of drugs because I was smart? Go me.

Actually, I do think this is true. The people I used to party with were some of the brightest people I've ever met ... when they weren't fucked up.

It's like everybody needed a break from the constant brain activity.

Also drug use by the wealthy is HUGE.

May seem that way

Knew a guy with big IQ, had the entire PDR memorized. And had big enough money to purchase an 1/8th of coke in prison, that broke in his stomach while smuggling. They called his dad to see him before he died. His dad replied, "you think that small amount would kill my son?" Besides his 140+ IQ, got a FexEx check 1st of every month to put of his prison store money. Least $1000. He was stoned every day. Probably from a guy also there who made enough money to have his brother buy him a Ferrari, just like Magnum's.

But it's not scientific, but my experiences in life, IQ to Usage is equal at all levels. People with low IQs do stupider things quicker and die or go to prison quicker.

Only real truth of drugs. There won't be a massive rush to drugs if legalized. Of the thousands of people I've met in life, only one said she'd try them if legalized. Look at the statics for current illegal use. And that's just the people that will admit to usage.

Gave up stupidity years ago.

Minor examples of people with big IQs.

Sort of all the smart people, I know who believe in UFOs, psychics and faith healers.

Bucky had the PDR memorized as we'd discuss the side effects of my arthritis meds and possible options.
Sony St John, doing, life, paroled out, got to drive his Ferrari for 3 months, before the Feds took him down along with his brother and bail bond business they financed off the prison drug sales.

I drank a lot in high school... I took a lot of pills when I was 18, did a lot of coke when I was 19, then started drinking again from 20 to the week after I turned 25.

Even the most recent results from that study appear to be over ten years out of date.

Maybe young people with higher than average IQs just end up with jobs that give them enough disposable income to partake of controlled substances in the company of their "sophisticated" friends.

About 15 of us were tripping one night and set a video camera up before we started. While we thought we were figuring out the meaning of life (and other deep things) the tape said we weren't making much sense. Thank god YouTube wasn't around then!

Was I the smartest because I befriended all of the city's suppliers and attended their private "appreciation" parties?

At my worst I was doing at least $300 a day worth and spending about $80 a week.

That is why my life spiraled out of control.

Indeed.

Personally, I gave up drugs in my teens (treatment, etc..) I'm hoping the aliens beam me up.

Nice avatar of Tesla, BTW

I wonder if Tesla's plans for an electrical grid over-air was actually his attempt at shocking sense into people... Tesla was CLEARLY a gifted person, who probably could have used some drugs.

Wasn't Einstein known for taking LSD or Shrooms or something?

This thread seems to be full of people (from my experience) who scored high on their ACTs or whatever else and because of this turned to a state of haughty indolence.

...and then became deadbeat webmasters.... most in this thread.

130-140 is considered "genius" - I put that term in quotes because some of the smartest people I know have no common sense or street smarts - so 186 would be considered Albert Einstein level genius, I wouldn't feel bad.

My girlfriend and my best friend went to one of the best pharmacy schools in the country, and I can tell you that these were some really intelligent kids who did A LOT of fucking drugs there. One of the main motivations for them to go to this school in the first place, and major in chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical business was their love of drugs.

I know a guy at Stanford right now getting his PhD (second hand friend) who loved to do heroin and other drugs. I can't remember what drug it was but he loved it being blown up his ass into his rectum where it packed one hell of a punch (similar to dipping tampons in alcohol and doing that).

Well he got caught and was facing 10-15 years or so and had the option to rat out a bunch of people which he did. Every since he has kept a very low profile and you'll never find him on any kind of social network of any kind. Saying Stanford is anonymous enough though.

I'd be interested to know what the most popular drug was that these people gravitated towards, most coke heads I know are dumb motherfuckers, on the other hand most weed smokers I know are fairly intelligent.

I would never consider 130-140 as genius level. 160+, yeah. Maybe its just me. I don't know.

Why would they say it's a "drawback"?

Whether the goody two shoes holier-than-thou fucks realize it or not, our culture would be far poorer if not for the fact that intelligent people enjoy recreational drugs.

The Beatles for instance. Some of the greatest songs ever written were written "under the influence". Jimi Hendrix...revolutionized guitar and music. The Stones, their best work was done on cocaine and heroin.
And just listen to the crap that the corporate bands produce today. I say get 'em all tripping on acid and we'd have good music being made again. lol

Art, literature, even architecture all follow the same thing.

As for "normal" people with "real" jobs...I'm sure many of you who have partied in your life have had the same experiences I have: doing blow with doctors, laywers, even politicians (one was a district attorney who told me that if I were ever arrested in his county he would prosecute me to the full extent of the law lol )

The media tends to only show "poor" or dumb people who are lying in the gutter from drug abuse. They don't talk about the tens of millions of people who party on recreational drugs and live perfectly normal lives.

I know it's politically incorrect in this conservative society we are in to say openly: "I like to party and smoke a joint, do a line, and have a beer"
But the reality is that a LOT of people do. There's a reason the U.S. is the biggest consumer of "illegal drugs"

You can pretty much walk into any crowded casino here in Vegas, go to the high roller poker room, and most guys at the table have a bag of coke in their pocket.

Like you say, it's definitely not 130-140 for a genius, that's just a high IQ

Many consider 160+ to be genius and 200+ as 'unmeasureable genius'

I did ridiculous amounts of marijuana myself. It might be reasonable to think that people whose brains are on overdrive would enjoy a substance that slows it down.

guess you never read the study. high iq people are bored by normal reality and seek extreme experiences to stimulate themselves.

btw if you think the world to be a pile of dung that means you are bind and dead soul. reality is beautiful.
