are you looking for someone to edit, or just encode?

i am actually building one, but not online yet.

HD tapes should not be a problem, but of course it takes much longer if they need to be captured first - instead of just encoding exisiting files

also a question: can the captured files be simply encoded into other formats or do they need to be edited first?

adding watermarks, fades, trailing clips etc are no problem and can be done automatically, but if real editing is needed it changes a lot.

feel free to drop me a mail to sales at amazingcontent dot com and give me a few more details and i'll send you a quote

You can also encode at home. Telestream Episode is great and works on Mac and PC and is known as one of the best mp4 h264 encoders. They also have some other products including encoders for higher volumes.

If you're looking for an automated solution check out the Elevated X Adult CMS.

We have an encoder/transcoder add-on that will automatically convert your videos into Flash, MOV, MPG, WMV, H.264 for iPad, 3GP and MP4 for iPod, iPhone, Droid and other mobile devices. Do all this, take screencaps, cut video clips and more with just 1 click.

See a full list of CMS features and a demo at http://www.elevatedx.com

Works like a charm, and you pay per processor and can use it as much as you want, you don't pay per video or mbit..

Do it all yourself, having a middle man just screws things up.

all these online services are fine, no problem with that. if you have a handful of clips.

also there are many tools that would do the job for you if you understand how exactly encoding works and what formats you need.

but there are people who give you 2000 videos and need them encoded into 5 different formats - and in that case outsourcing might make sense

Not to cut into your business but if you need 200 videos in several different formats just use Xilisoft Video Converter. Drop and drag any kind of format into the converter window (can be all kinds) and just specify what kind of format you want out. Walk away. Of course if you want those all in 5 different formats you'll have to run it 5 times but you're good to go with that. $40 vs paying hundreds or thousands for outsources

well, i use a more sophisticated solution which is Carbon Coder and costs $6000, but i have huge amounts to encode and it saves me a lot of time.

but you are right, there are cheap solutions. you can even use FFMPEG and with one line of code and a batch file that you write in notepad you can encode thousands of files. and it's free

but you can also build your own car...

once you have to upload 2000 files with 5gb each you might want to reconsider. but for small amounts and small files this is fine

On a side note one thing that flusters me is the price of Autodesks Smoke, $15k? It must really have some features that just make it a power house. But for just regular run of the mill just use Sony Vegas and the video converter I mentioned and you're good for $100.

MaDalton, what do you use for resizing images in bulk? I have an opensource product that works well for thousands of photos but it still isn't as customizable as I'd like.

we use Vegas Pro, it's $600 - but it's fine. i still miss Ulead Media Studio Pro, it was simply perfect for my needs. But Corel ruined it.

and i never looked into Autodesk again after they abandoned Cleaner XL, thats why i got Carbon Coder instead

You seem to know a hell of a lot more than me, but then again this is just a side job for me. As a one man show you have to be jack-of-all-trades master of none.

I used to use Cleaner XL back when I worked for Wildcash (2005 - 2009) , was a great product once I had it set up with Deadline (network render management), had a great cluster encoding farm going pretty hard out in the end. Although poor support for XL from autodesk themselves, it was a great product.

Carbon was always going to be the next choice, but the price was something that had to be justified. There is many great products out there now, i think a combination of custom coded scripts and network management and your set, all you need is an editor (sony vegas is great for this) and publish that to your scripts to do the rest.

I was always curious about how someone had Carbon set up, do you have a mass render farm pumping it out?

I always had the idea to set up a live linux distro which could join a cluster encoding farm, once everyone left the office for the weekend, slap in a cd in each computer, boot up there machine to join the cluster for the weekends render and you have yourself a super computer of not just the dedicated 20 odd render computers, but an additional 40 other computers pumping it out... would be cool! :P

lol - yeah - but you need carbon server for that, and it's "only" $15k

but i am usually not on really time sensitive projects, so i havent taken that step yet

but having the possiblity of just dropping a few thousand shortcuts in a folder and having those videos converted into 1 to n output formats without watching it is fun

and to be honest - when you are a really good programmer you can probably achieve that with some scripts and ffmpeg too. but i am not.
