Carbon was always going to be the next choice, but the price was something that had to be justified. There is many great products out there now, i think a combination of custom coded scripts and network management and your set, all you need is an editor (sony vegas is great for this) and publish that to your scripts to do the rest.
I was always curious about how someone had Carbon set up, do you have a mass render farm pumping it out?
I always had the idea to set up a live linux distro which could join a cluster encoding farm, once everyone left the office for the weekend, slap in a cd in each computer, boot up there machine to join the cluster for the weekends render and you have yourself a super computer of not just the dedicated 20 odd render computers, but an additional 40 other computers pumping it out... would be cool! :P

lol - yeah - but you need carbon server for that, and it's "only" $15k
but i am usually not on really time sensitive projects, so i havent taken that step yet
but having the possiblity of just dropping a few thousand shortcuts in a folder and having those videos converted into 1 to n output formats without watching it is fun
and to be honest - when you are a really good programmer you can probably achieve that with some scripts and ffmpeg too. but i am not.
