a german shepherd...they do it often

deer are stupid..the dog just matches speed and leans their head in and breaks a leg with one quick bite

or often the deer injures itself in its own frenzy to get away...and is then easy prey.

i had never seen her chase down a deer...however that is what the game warden told us she was doing.
i have seen her chase a full sized moose though, and it took off running and ran by me at full speed...with her at its heels

any terrier will hunt shit down and try to kill them--they were bred originally for that purpose. Pitbulls are just a lot stronger and more lethal because of it.

My gf's 11 year old lab caught his first squirrel recently after 11 years of chasing them in the back yard... I think at most he would just bark at a goat though, or maybe try to lure them into a game of frisbee ;)

I've trained and hunted with coonhounds for a couple years, and I never seen a dog match speed with a deer. That deer was either injured or sick. That's pretty dangerous as well, you might want to try breaking her off of big game like that before she gets trampled by a moose or winds up chasing a deer halfway across the state, or worse - onto a highway.

If it's a problem you can break them off of deer and other unwanted game with breaking scents, which are scents extracted from glands of whichever unwanted game you're having a problem with. You spread some of this on a rag and tie it around the dogs neck. Usually after being bombarded with this scent for a couple hours, a few days in a row, they'll never want to smell it again in their life, let alone chase after it.

Here's the scents if you need them:

Must be in the suburbs trapped in a backyard or something, because a healthy deer can easily stay ahead of any dog out in the woods. I'm not saying it's completely impossible, but highly unlikely.

Well that was long ago.
the game warden was threatening to kill her, cause she was such a nuisance for deer.
you are right, 1 on 1 if a moose or a deer turned to fight, it would probably just take one kick to finish the dog or injure it to such an extent that they just want to get away.
However, deer and even moose usually flee first fight last. this leaves them open to lethal attacks from large breed dogs.

Coondogs are pretty fast, they might be faster in the real bush though. Open field no dog will keep up with a moose. However put big trees in the way and the bigger animals who have to go around things more slow down.

must have been a shitty stock of lab then.. Labs are bred for chasing down and finishing off fowl, not tearing apart with their teeth... shit they don't even bruise a bird upon retrieval...

This just happened yesterday near where I live.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. ? Dogs are believed to be the cause of seven farm animals deaths on Colonial High School's campus, deputies said.
The dead farm animals were found in a Colonial High School barn on Monday and Tuesday morning, investigators said.
It's the second day in a row that students have arrived at school and found the animals they cared for dead.
Investigators confirmed that within two days, a total of seven animals were killed.
The surviving animals will spend the night in a secure location, officers said.
Investigators said that two large dogs, possibly German Shepherds, were seen on school property in the past few days. Blood evidence found at the scene, as well as puncture wounds to the dead animals, were consistent with dog bites, investigators said.

Except of course for Deerhounds. My buddy has a couple of them and they're insanely fast and energetic. Almost impossible to wear them out.

Just to light some fire to this thread

KTLA News
6:25 p.m. PDT, August 15, 2011

PACIFICA, Calif. (KTLA) -- Preliminary autopsy results have revealed that a pregnant Bay Area woman killed by one of her pit bulls August 11 died from blood loss and shock.

The victim, 32-year-old Darla Napora, was pronounced dead on Thursday afternoon, August 11, at the couple's home in the seaside village of Pacifica, south of San Francisco, Pacifica Police Capt. Dave Bertini said.

The autopsy, along with an analysis conducted by dog bite experts, also determined that only one of the couple's two pit bulls, a 2-year-old male named Gunner, was involved in the attack.

Sign up for KTLA 5 Breaking News Email Alerts

The woman's husband, Greg, told police he came home from work at around noon on Thursday to find Gunner standing, bloodied, over his wife's mauled body, Bertini said.

First responders to the scene found the woman unresponsive in a front room of the home with massive trauma to her upper body, Bertini said.

A second pit bull was found cowering in the corner.

Bertini said Greg told authorities that Gunner had been confined in a back room.

When the dog managed to escape and enter the front yard, officers shot it three times, Bertini said.

Darla was an avid pit bull lover and supporter of Bay Area Dog lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, or Bad Rap, a group that tries to change negative attitudes toward pit bulls.

Impressions taken from both dogs show that all of Napora's injuries were consistent with bites from Gunner, and there was no evidence that the couple's other dog, a female, was involved in the attack.

Authorities are still trying to determine what prompted the attack, Bertini said, adding that no evidence indicating that the dogs had been trained to attack.

Darla was an avid pit bull lover and supporter of Bay Area Dog lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, or Bad Rap, a group that tries to change negative attitudes toward pit bulls.

Greg says he's forgiven the dog and plans to bury Darla with Gunner's ashes.

Oh lordes....

Larger breed hounds can run a deer to ground. Deer are fast but tire easily and dogs once on the scent never stop.

i live in a rural area most of the time, deer are always getting caught and killed by dogs, there aren't any pitbulls near here.

Those dirty goats had it coming Are you one of those anti-pit bull extremists or something? How dare you defame the pit bulls after they simply "liquidate" those anti-pitbull goats.

Oh lordes... for sure.
strange about pit bulls is that they are a lethal weapon but because it is a pet, people let their emotions get the best of them. in my opinion pit bulls should only be allowed in public if the they are wearing a muzzle. if people want them in their homes that is their business, just like owning guns.

Pit Bull Attacks 3-Year-Old Girl

A 3- year-old Plattsmouth girl is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull Friday.

Police say the girl was at the neighbor's house to play. The neighbor, 38- year old Terra Fleming's pit bull, Peanut, bit the girl in the face. Police say it happened when the girl reached out to hug the dog. She was given stitches at the hospital.

Animal Control official, Sue Baker, said this isn't the first time the dog has snapped on a kid. Baker said the dog bit Fleming's son in May, and two attacks is two too many.

Anyone who believes its because of a breed has no knowledge of dogs. The problem is the people who own them. Not the dogs. I have had 2 pitbulls in my life, and the closest they have ever come to biting anything is when they eat there food. If you raise your animals to be aggressive, they will be that way. Do you think Mastiff's or German Sheppards are any less dangerous then pitbulls? Or what about Rottweilers, I am pretty sure a lot of people use these as guard dogs. In my life I have been bit by a Poddle, a Shitzu and never once by a pitbull. I have been around way more pitbulls then I have Shitzu's. In this case it is a matter of an animal killing another animal. This happens every day in the wild. Dogs act as they are taught. If you do not know this. You know nothing about dogs, and probably shouldnt have kids either.

Yea. I am sure she reached out to 'Hug' the dog. Any owner who keeps any dog around a 3 year old, should be examined. Kids this age are known to be rough when they play. I would never have a dog, even mine, who wouldnt harm a fly around kids this small. You are looking for an accident.

any by the way. it is funny that the pit bull attack dot jpg picture is not even of a pitbull.
