wtf .... why did i just get charged $19.99 to renew a .us domain at godaddy?

that's the price to renew a domain at godaddy for a year? i thought they were a discount registrar. i looked and you can register a .us domain for $3.99 at godaddy. i could have let the domain expire, hoped nobody grabbed it and re-registered it for 16 dollars less than i just paid to renew it.

I love GoDaddy. Call them or view your invoice to see why it was so much.

i only have a handful domains at godaddy so i have never really paid attention to what they do - most of my domains are at good ol' Directnic.

so godaddy's game is to offer cheap prices when you register a domain and then fuck you over when you have to renew? pretty smart.

nothing looked unusual - that was just the price in black and white to renew a domain for one year - $19.99 - which is expensive.

go renew a domain and you'll get charged 19.99 - i didn't say there was a problem, just that 19.99 to renew a domain name for a year is very expensive. what's the wholesale price for the biggest domain registrar - 5 bucks tops?

Most registrars that offer discounts on the first year break even or lose money. Wholesale on .com / .net etc are just some cents under what you pay. I have no idea what a .us costs.

Check domain forums like NamePros as they have a thread dedicated to GoDaddy discount codes under Domain Name Discussion. You usually have to hit the last few pages of the thread as codes expire and new ones are released so you wanna find newer codes that still work. Type a few in that ya find and roll with whichever one still works and gives ya the best discount. I have been using the same .com renewal code for a year+ but it seems some alternate extension codes expire more frequently so check the thread as guys post new ones all the time. GoDaddy is all about coupon codes.

you have domains with directnic but you're bitching about godaddy prices? lol

here is a tip, godaddy has tons of coupon codes, search google first.

For GoDaddy, simply switch off auto-renew and when the domains come up for renewal use the latest discount codes to reduce the cost.

My account at Godaddy says .us renewals are $7.29, but I'm in their 'Domain Discount Club'. If you have a lot of domains at Godaddy, ask your account rep and they will put you in the club for free.

Same as what car insurance companies do - cheap the first year then hike the price up on renewal hoping you just pay it without noticing.

you have to be proactive with godaddy. if you just let domain auto renew they will charge as much as possible. you have to renew manually and use codes. and yes, like many other registrars they offer cheaper prices for new registrations that renewals.

$19.99 really is the normal .us price at Godaddy. I would suggest transferring it to Namecheap for $9.

godaddy has deeper discounting if you renew in bulk, I think renewing 101 domains at a time cost me about 7.49 each

Yep.. always check their pricing list..

.us
New C$4.06
Renewals C$20.36

Not worth it to register a .us unless you have a specific use for it since you can get plenty of others for < $10/year

hmmm.. That's interesting.. GoDaddy has higher prices on most tlds.. With namecheap you can get a .us for $7.99/year including renewels.

I have some at Moniker also, but they charge you extra to forward your domain which is just ridiculous in my opinion.
