Whitehouse Victory Over Khadafy's Reign

Sipping on my latte and reading the morning news.

Not one American soldier killed!

=====================
President Obama yesterday celebrated the end of Moammar Khadafy?s brutal, 42-year reign, saying the ?dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted? from Libya?s people -- while claiming vindication of his own policies.

Claiming minimal involvement. Check.

Claiming victory. Check.

Getting away with it. Check.

Of course, the fact that he has now established a precedent whereby a president can have US warplanes bomb another country for 7 months without any vote in congress at all, I'm sure you will all enjoy it when a Republican president does the same thing..... now that he will be able to point to this campaign and say it's ok for him to do also....

What I learned is that allowing "your guy" to wield more power, then allows "the other guy" that same power when their turn comes around, and it just keeps on growing, and growing. It's like the killing of Anwar Awlaki. Sounds great except eventually it will be ok for future presidents to decide that if an american blogs something in support of a point of view that the administration doesn't like, they can deem it a terrorist act, and with no trial, simply kill him.

This stuff just keeps growing. Don't be upset when the next Republican president says that it's ok to start bombing Iran, or Korea, or Cuba for a year, without congress, or you, having any say in it at all.

Man.. when are people going to realize that politics isn't ever truly about one side vs the other? It's just a ploy to keep people such as yourself confused as to what's really going on...

It's sad really...

This is comical. You have zero clue what is going to happen there in the next few months. Could be the bloodiest civil war in the history of the middle east. Could be the new home to Al Queda... could be nothing. Riling the rabble to murder their own leadership doesn't guarantee a solid future... Anymore than killing Saddam meant everyone would automatically embrace democracy and western ideas.

Just finished rubbing Patchouli on my dry elbows. My black friend recommends coco butter but I hate the way coco butter smells.

I don't really consider this an American victory. Oddly enough, it seems to be a French victory. The French were the first in, flew the most fights, dropped the most weapons, and even ran 80% of the helicopter flights involved.

Leon Panetta has done a masterful job as Secretary of Defense so far. Best thing his predecessor Robert Gates did was to retire. Gates' predecessor Donald H. Rumsfeld at least had the brains to resign -- that man was a liar and a political hack.

Interesting point is; Leon Panetta's Defense Department has been able to target and kill so many enemies of America so quickly and in so little time -- what's up with that?

The neo-cons want to prolong wars and enrich themselves incurring public debt in their wake ... There's your answer ...

One man uprooted a major department, probably the biggest, and totally changed their way of thinking and missions within four months? He must have the Midas Touch.

Weird. You should really look at how much the current administration spent on the war versus Bush, and then not type anymore. But I love your idiotic and misleading post. Also, great rationalization.

If it's a U.N. mission and meets the U.N. guidelines, then the President can do exactly what he did. It's pre-approved by Congress and the funding for it too, and Obama did give notice, which is all he has to do, by law.

A Republican president has done the same thing, many of them.

OK, the real story goes deeper ...

When Gates had his confirmation hearings as Secretary for Defense I was contacted by a US Senator's office (a senior Armed Services Committee member) as to what questions I would suggest the Senator, a Democrat BTW, put to Mr. Gates ...

I suggested several pointed questions that would have exposed Mr. Gates' inadequacies for the appointment along with the recommendation that the Senator vote against the appointment -- he did not do so.

Result -- we got years of do-nothing bullshit. Perhaps, that was the intended goal?

First of all, what the UN says has ABSOLUTELY no bearing on our constitution, and god forbid it ever does. There is no provision there that says that if other countries join in, the president can act without congressional approval. Please show me the cite, if you disagree.

Secondly, by law, there must be shown a clear and present danger to the US, and the time in which he has to act, even with that, is limited, I believe, to 90 days.

Thirdly, I don't approve of any president doing it Rep, or Dem, and this 7 months of bombing has REALLY pushed the precedent out to a very wide envelope. The point of my post is that we are granting the executive office WAY too much power, and it's going to bite us in the ass, very very soon.

We, i.e.; the Congress, allowed the last president to go to war "with the axis of evil (did that also include Darth Vader?)" more specifically -- Iraq. Apart from the accumulation 100's of billions of dollars in public debt -- what was accomplished?

It made the world safe for democracy? Heard that bullshit from Johnson and Nixon in my youth ...

I agree with you..... AT LEAST, we had the ability to lobby our congress people, one way or the other, even if the choice was a bad one. If the Executive branch acts unilaterally, then there's F all we can do about it.
