Can u swim?

I moved into a place that has a shared pool and when people come to visit I am amazed by how many cant swim or even stay afloat...

They just sink....

Even if I could not swim my legs would start kicking and I would stay above the surface I am sure.

It must be some sort of instinct that some of have and some dont...

It's so simple to stay afloat. Keep your head back, chest up and some air in your lungs -- you barely need to kick. I always see people killing themselves to tread water and its kind of funny.

like anything else it takes practice.. if you grew up with a pool in your back yard i'm sure you can swim and float perfectly fine. If you had a decent public pool set up in your community (which i did) then you probably wouldn't have a problem either. If you didn't even get into a pool until you were 18, never took any lessons, have never seen others do it you will get nervous, tense up and sink to the bottom..

It's not easy to learn at an older age because you have to overcome fears. When you are a kid there are less worries, because normally our parents do it for us.

I have seen some Discovery Channel type progs about that sort of thing and it does seem that we are born with it and loose it as we get older.

Excellent swimmer, experienced heavy surf swimmer. Anyone with kids is irresponsible if they don't enroll them at a very young age in swimming classes.

I grew up having a pool in the back yard, and our house was the summer hang out.

But when I went into the Marines I was stunned that half of recruits couldn't swim. It wasn't only blacks, it was whites from the country too. That really surprised me.

I don't know if you are joking - but that is so common.

Even when I was a skinny kid I bobbed around like a cork.

yes, I can swim, and very good. Being an island girl, learning to swim was a must as I grew up.

there are people with positive buoyancy and people with negative buoyancy, it has nothing to do with their body weight. My son is skinny as a rail (one of those 6 year olds that run around all day long and have no body fat at all), and has 100% negative buoyancy, which he inherited from my husband, who is about 25lbs overweight, and still can't float to save his life.
They both swim pretty good, thank goodness. Or they'd be toast now living in Cancun!

I had an indoor pool around the corner from where I lives, had high dives and everything, swam like a fish

One would think.... But I never gave it any thought. I guess somewhere along the line someone asked me if I could swim and I said "Yeah, my parents had a pool" and that was that.

I can do 10 or so laps, dive & hold my breath for a 1:20 or so but if I were on a sinking ship in the middle of the ocean I'm pretty much fucked.

Swimming is like a natural instinct to me. Perhaps, it is because my swimming instructor pushed me in the deep end of the pool back when I was around 7 years old during swimming lessons. Man, I was fucking pissed!

But I sure as hell learned how to swim.

It's probably been 6-7 years since I've swam. Was pretty good at it for awhile. Not a huge fan of it anymore. I sunburn easily so being outside for a long time isn't the best idea. Can't afford an indoor pool. So... yeah.
