Dedicated Hosting question

Anyone have anything to say about datahosters.net for dedicated hosting?
Good or bad? The prices seem good and so does the uptime.
I have one of my domains hosted on a friends dedicated server and this is who he uses. I've never had a problem with any downtime and the server is fast.

But I would like some other options on them. It's time for me to get dedicated hosting and move away from the virual servers.

Also a dumb question, what does 1Mbs of transfer break down to in gigs of transfer? You would think I would know this by now.

Thanks in advance
Oz

1MBit/second is about 316 gig/month, i think.

Don't know anything about datahosters. I recommend Sin Host.

I max a 100mbit line at aprox 900 gigabytes a day. This is pretty steady traffic, not to many hills and valleys .. I wouldnt want to push it anymore, want to keep it fast for surfers.

that means a 1mbit line maxed can handle aprox 9 gigabytes per day ... X 30 days = 275 gigs per month. You could push this up to about 300, but you're going to experience surfers waiting for downloads and unhappy.. I'd guess anyway.

Theoretically 1mbps of transfer would equal about 320 gigs.

BUT, if you have a line capped at 1mbps and use all of it all month your site will be unreachable. (If you're going to cap your line you need to cap it about 40-50% higher than what you actually plan on using in order to handle traffic spikes. That's why capped bandwidth is cheaper than non-capped)

I had a box at datahosters for a short while. While they were very helpful their network problems, or problems with verio forced them to cap my line at 10mbps.
I was running paid listings on the Hun and the page was virtually unreachable. (I have a page today doing 44mbps)

They apologized and offered to move me to another provider that would match their prices at no charge, but I just went ahead and moved all of my stuff to Techie Media

You should also know that their dedicated plans are "unmanaged" services. They give you a server with software installed and an uplink, but you have to set up your sites, email, log rotation etc. yourself. So you better know all of the relevant unix commands.

If you know how to manage a server and they have their network issues ironed out they're not a bad choice.
Even though I was very unhappy about their network issues (read: capping my line) they handled it right from a customer service point of view by offering to move me and saying they were going to issue refunds for the problems caused by it.

Thanks
Lot of good info.
The plan I'm looking at right now is 10Mb/s connection with 5Mb/s of bandwidth and 18gigs of space.

I host a number of domains and the type of sites are Tgp, Cj2, Bbs, AVS, and so on. I also host a low traffic site for a friend of mine.
But the main reason for getting dedicated hosting is a new high traffic project I'm thinking about doing.

Data Hosters are resellers who co-locate their servers is someone else's data center. Their support people are not at the same location as the servers. Other than that I don't know much about them.

Have you considered Wild Web Sites ?

http://www.wildwebsites.com

This operation has a ' private ' data center and a large tech staff. All of the 400+ servers are physically located at their offices so they can put their hands on your server in just seconds if they have to.

Thanks everyone for some great info.

To those of you I haven't talk to yet, I'll be contacting you later this weekend or the first of next week.

I have to be honest! The spec's I posted above I can get for $300 amonth but I would have to manage the server myself. It's also just a starting point for the bandwidth and space to get my project started.
I can see this taking a lot more if it takes off.

Anyway, if any of you want to drop me a email with a few price quotes and a close date for the offer that would be great!
You can email me at: webmaster at eroticcandyland.com

Hen,
I never got your email. Try again at the above addy.

Thanks again

I think you guys should quote your best deal on this box right here in this thread.

1. Dedicated managed server
2. 5mbps burstable BW
3. What kind of pipe?
4. Avg calc or 95%?

I have been with datahosters for 1 1/2 month now and I have been very happy with them.
They answered all my support requests prompt and politely.
I would have no problem recommending them to someone else.
