Web Develop on oDesk, good idea?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get some projects to work on as a freelancer and I'm looking into the whole freelancer.com, odesk.com and guru.com sites. I'm currently working on oDesk to get my profile up to date. I'm from the Netherlands/Europe (so not from a <$1 country, if you know what I mean).

I was wondering before going this road, if you as website/network owner looking for a web developer (or any other contractors), would you consider hire somebody via oDesk or any of the similar sites? What are your experience thus far with the outsourcing sites? Do you look specific for the cheapest (few dollars per hour) or are you willing to pay a bit more for serious contractors via such sites? Or do you rather approach contractors directly?

As some of you know, I'm starting for myself to work as freelancer and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth to spend a lot of time on those outsourcing websites, creating profiles, doing tests, etc.

Cheers,
CodeR70

Like I have told you before, if you can't follow something as simple as the rules posted at https://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=950962 then how could you possibly be trusted to follow detailed instructions given to you by a client?

You obviously did not read point 10.

What insinuation? I made a perfectly clear statement. There was nothing coy or indirect about it. You get an attitude when someone points out you don't follow the rules so it's a safe assumption that you won't follow your client's directions and will then cop an attitude when they point it out to you.

I'm betting your attitude is the reason you're so desperate for work. Stop being a little shithead and you might get a job.

Ignorance is bliss. The above is actually what 10. is about. To be honest, clients that react as yourself are the worst and if I can avoid them, I will. Even if it mean I have to eat from the garbage. This is so very bad. Its very sad to see the arrogance of some of you guys. But then again, post count = level of asswhole, imho.

Thanks for your contribution and ignorance. Forum heroes like yourself know best right. Crying about noobs all the time but in the meantime completely off in terms of knowing how to communicate correctly and efficiently.

If you are seriously have something to say, drop me a line at [email protected]. But I bet you rather try to make me look like a fool in public right?

Gonna ignore you for now, have better things to do.

Babaganoosh has a point unless you are a top advertiser here you can't have large sigs.
if you can't follow board rules, following client specs becomes questionable too is the point. has nothing to do with #10.

First of all, forum rules are something completely different then specs, requirements or work orders. If you think they are the same then I think you are just an idiot like Babaganoosh is. Secondly, his "noob", "I'm betting your attitude is the reason you're so desperate for work." and other referrals in his followup messages have everything to do with 10 (which is btw bannable, the sig issues are not).

Now, let's look at the real issue here, loads of sigs do not qualify to be acceptable to that rule. There are even sigs that are beyond the 700px (which is not even allowed by a "top advertiser"). I don't see the sig police act on that. Also, what is most irritating to the members like Babaganoosh is that they drop statements to show their uberness, it has nothing to do with self-regulations of a forum. If he really was that concerned about our sigs he would know how to deal with that, you talk to a mod! That is how it supposed to work.

Its sad to see that even forum heroes that are a member for 10 years still do not know how to behave in public. It's like they have to measure and compare their dicks all day long.

If a mod comes by and thinks my sig is bad or not conforming the rules, then they can remove it. That is also what the rules states. But I expect such rule implementation to be valid for all, not just a few. I do not expect people to start bashing in at the first response of a serious topic.

I'm working my ass off to see what the best options are for me to get food on the table. But idiots like Babaganoosh do not care that much. They seem to think they are so uber that they can dish out idiotic statements like he did and expect people like me to bow down for them. He could have send me an e-mail? I would probably have changed my sig by now.

Anyway, I'm done with the sig police kind of shit. If a mod wants me to change or remove my sig, they know how to find me?and those 1000ands of other members. For the rest these idiots will end up in my ignore list. I should learn to do that earlier though.

Hey mods? if you need somebody to police the sigs, I'm available?not for free unfortunately ;)

BG is trolling you because he doesn't want the competition. My guess.

Then again, you could just fix your sig. ;)

I'm not for hire so he's not competition.

I'm not really trolling the moron, just fucking with him because he thinks he's special and the rules don't apply to him. I hate that attitude.

Babaganoosh is right, and just because some others are not following the rules and the moderators haven't gotten to them yet is no reason to ignore the rules

If you refer to the signature rule he probably is, the rest he's very wrong and I hope that mods will see that as well.

BTW, I'm not ignoring the signature rules because other ignore them as well. I ignore them because I choose to do so and hopefully get some sort of "reasonable understanding" from the mods just like they do with those 1000ands of other sigs. Is it wrong, yes it is. Should non-mods make fellow members look like a fool for that?

And the thing is, if he communicated reasonably I would not have any issues with it. But for some how here on GFY we like to bash into each other before we start to get reasonable (if ever). As said, he's in my ignore list with some fellow forum heroes. I don't care that much what he cries about anymore. Its his own time he wastes now.

I've hired people on oDesk many times. I find that most of the coders fail to do good regression testing. I usually end up doing that myself before paying them.

My hiring decision is based on; 1) fluency in English, 2) skill as a programmer and 3) cost. I always pay based on project versus hourly.

Doing a look-over to make sure everything works after they made their changes. Sometimes (if they are working on a part of a bigger project) their changes may break other stuff. So it's like a sanity check. You can go pretty deep into it but that's the gist of it.

Word. I didn't use them much, but the few times I tried I went crazy when I discovered none (and I mean like in 0, zero, none, zilch!) did ever even heard of the word "backup" so they could fix their crap. That's just one of the reasons I don't use them anymore. Many of them are just scammers looking for a quick buck and won't even care at all, and giving them access to data and servers.... no thank you, there are better, faster and less painful ways to suicide

Basically testing stuff that has been changed, see more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_testing

@coder70
I checked your oDesk profile and if you want to do php work, you'll need to take the php test, otherwise I doubt many people will choose you, specially when you're pretty expensive for oDesk standards. The bare minimum I'll base my search on is language and (what I need) test.
