Bachmann: Irene is God's warning for politicians

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's campaign said on Monday she was only joking when she described Hurricane Irene and last week's earthquake in the eastern United States as a warning from God.

The Minnesota congresswoman, who has gained media prominence for her fiery attacks on Democratic President Barack Obama, said in Florida that Irene was an act of God to get politicians' attention to the debt and deficit problem.

"Of course she was saying it in jest," Alice Stewart, spokeswoman for Bachmann's campaign, told Reuters.

Irene killed at least 21 people and cut power to 5 million homes and businesses along its path up the eastern seaboard from North Carolina. Vermont was battling the state's worst flooding since 1927 after Irene swept through as a tropical storm late on Sunday.

A rare earthquake also rocked the East Coast last week.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?'" Bachmann said at a campaign event in Sarasota, Florida on Sunday.

"Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending," she said.

Bachmann, among the top three candidates to win the Republican nomination and take on Obama next year, made similar comments elsewhere in Florida on Saturday, drawing some laughs from her audience.

Bachmann is a favorite of the fiscally conservative Tea Party movement and of religious social conservatives, but recent Republican presidential contender polls have shown her lagging behind Texas Governor Rick Perry and moderate Mitt Romney, who appeals to the party's business wing.

Bachmann has made a series of gaffes on the campaign trail, including mixing up Elvis' birthday with the anniversary of his death in a speech. During the 2008 election campaign she said Obama may hold "anti-American views" but later stepped back from the statement.

Do you personally know this woman? Have you studied her voting record during her time as an elected official? Have you listened to any of her speeches in their entirety? What information do you use to back your claim that her supporters are "idiots?" Your answers to these questions could dispel the rumor that you were spoon fed your information. Again, I must state that I am not a supporter. I love my country and the whole political process. It pisses me off to see this happen to any candidate. Well, Obama is running. When he began his recent vacation, he promised he would have a new jobs plan he would announce in September (after he returned from vacation.) All of the pundits have been speculating about what might be in this plan.

He did a plan last year, with not so much success ( major blockage to all aspects ) ;
He is coming back with another one , that will also be torpedoed by the GOP ...

You are actually proving my point with this. The key here would be you actually "seeing" the guy acting stupid. The equivalent of what is going on here is somebody telling you about a guy acting stupid somewhere else. Once you insert another person into the report, you have to at least try to verify the account before you proclaim this guy to be a moron for what he has done.

What if the guy turned out to be a guy that worked for the power company, clearing debris from a dead power line? Even if you watched video of the act, what if the part of the video showing him turn off the power was edited out? Since you didn't actually see it, you are being "fed" the story. MSNBC just did this to Perry with a speech he gave that mentioned a black cloud being over the U.S.. The way it was edited made it sound like he was referring to Obama when he was actually referring to the economy. Al Sharpton still called Perry a racist for the comment even after MSNBC was forced to apologize.

The report was from a year ago. The guy just used the same tactic two years in a row to distract you. It obviously worked because it fooled you.

As for the GOP being at fault, why didn't he do anything when he controlled the House, Senate, and White House? Two solid years he could have "fixed' the economy yet he chose other things to ram down our throats. The real answer is he has no fix for anything and the GOP are stupid enough to let him blame them. He never accepts any blame for anything. Bush ate my homework still works on you huh?
