Interesting move by ICM

They have a list of hundreds, possibly thousands of celebrities that have had their names permanently banned from the new .xxx adults-only internet domain at no cost to them.

Quote:
El Reg can reveal that everyone from Justin Bieber to Piers Morgan has had their .xxx address placed into a permanent "reserved" status by the registry manager, ICM Registry.
I wonder ow this is going to work out for them.

Nice that they are able to pick the winners and the losers in this. Just like the fucking government.

I think this is a smart move that they planned well in advance.

The celeb domains would have given them a headace so instead thier PR dept say they will hold them...but think about it more and you will realise that these names are popular and will produce traffic, so they will put paid links or some type of parking system into place to make sure they actually make $$$$ even if its only promoting ICM.

They mean they're putting them into the cellar to age like fine wine.

That could probably be said about any domain that was protected. I wonder if an attorney could argue that a precedent has been set and that copyright holders should expect the same courtesy.

El Reg can reveal that everyone from Justin Bieber to Piers Morgan has had their .xxx address placed into a permanent "reserved" status by the registry manager, ICM Registry.

This means that cybersquatters or crafty porn webmasters will not be able to register domains such as Beyonce.xxx or BritneySpears.xxx to drive traffic to their sites.

It also means that many celebrities will not have to pay to protect their personal brands in the forthcoming .xxx "sunrise period" or take cybersquatters to court in future.

If ICM doesn't offer the same service to adult stars, the action shows they don't respect adult stars the same as regular celebrities.

Again, it show how little they have in common with our industry.

Personally, looks to me like the adult stars are about to be .......

Just my opinion....

Even more so, what about pepsi.xxx or toyrus.xxx or anyone/thing else that has a trademark. Sorry, realize I said copyright above, meant trademark.

Well its still a win-win for ICM in my view.

First they ask everyone to pay to protect thier domains and those bigger trademark holders or corps with good lawyers who object get the " ok we will protect it from registration deal" making it look like they are doing something to address the issue. Following this expect some type of page saying protected from registration with links or ICM promotion.

Using this method would make for a great excuse to have thier logo or links on pages such as pepsi and coke for example.

Dont be surprised if you see them offer all types of sweet deals , I think they have this all planned out from every angle.

From a legal standpoint, it should be all or nothing. Either they grant every trademark holder the right to block their name from registration for free, or they don't grant any trademark holder that courtesy. They're going to attract a bigger shitstorm than they had been.

To me, it looks like discrimination at its worse......a real putdown for adult stars and starlets telling them they don't rate an exemption.

+1
can't see who is going to put up the money to challenge it though compared to the size of the blocking fee.
