Has Anyone Completely Cut Off Their Home Phone Line And Is Only Using Their Mobile Now?

I still have a landline in my house for some reason? I'm not sure exactly why as my wife and I never use it LOL! Plus I lose my shit every time i get a call from a telemarketer (since that is really the only time the phone rings on that phone).

Has anyone else on here just completely cut off their home land line and is only using their mobile?

That is exactly the same here. The only reason my land line ever rings is due to someone trying to sell me something.

Cable guy was out recently and made a good point.

If your electricity goes out, the odds of the cell towers going out is fairly likely as well. Might want to keep your $10 landline around just in case of a freak emergency. Might make one feel better having little kids in the house.

I have a land line w/ 2 separate numbers, but I use them as voicemail only.
Those 2 numbers are all over tons of business cards, etc...so, for the $ it costs, they are worth keeping...but I literally don't have a phone connected to them, and only use them as VM, and check via my cell phone.

I recently added a landline back on, since we have noticed in emergencies (earthquakes, etc), that the cell phone lines are all jammed.

Only needed in case of an extreme emergency... And in that case all you get is "All lines are busy now. Please hang up and try your call again at a later time."

So why do you need one again?

most single people i know don't have land lines - people with families do.

kinda dangerous, people lose cellphones, what if somebody has an accident or a heart attack/stroke in the house and every minute is vital while you're running around looking for where the cellphone is.

Along these lines, everyone in my family seems to turn off their cells at night. Have had to call at odd hours a few times and could only get through with land.

Luckily I only have one person who does that. She genuinely couldn't understand why i told her it was ridiculous to have a phone but then turn it off. Even when I said in 18 years of me having a mobile the few times it has rang in the night it has been someone that needed me not someone being mischievous.

I have to keep mine because I am stuck with bell dsl here. I also need it to use the ppv feature on my satellite receivers...otherwise I have to make a phone call if I want to order a ppv movie. I just have the basic line features. I even use my computer for an answering machine to avoid their bullshit monthly fees. That also lets me block telemarketers easily and I have it setup so callers are announced over a speaker by voice and on a touchscreen in the kitchen

Your cable guy is likely wrong in regards to short (under 4 hours), typical power failures. Many cell phone sites have battery backup to cover that and/or alternate nearby cell towers, even if it normally doesn't service to that area, can pick up the slack... When dialing 911, the cell phone and/or tower may boost power / handle lower than ideal signal strength to get the 911 call through.

An important caveat to that are people who live out in the country and/or only get connectivity from one cell phone site with seemingly no other towers anywhere in the vicinity.

On a related topic, while it's true that land lines are often functional during power failures, most people these days plug in phones that require external power, and have little to no battery backup capability - hence, even though the land line is live, still no phone service...

In short, if one is going to rely on a land line for emergencies, use a traditional corded phone, not a wireless set and/or answering machine combos.

Ron

The last time I had a land line was about 6 years ago. For some reason the people I was buying my house through required it for the mortgage so I hooked one up and as soon as everything went through I took it down and have been cell phone online since.

Exactly what I was thinking.

On another note; seems like the phone company gave up on me first.
My land line stopped working and I could never get it fixed correctly.

I finally could not even get a dial tone.
I snatched that shit off the wall and slammed it in the trash can.
I called the phone company and told them to cancel my phone, they
were like in disbelief. They say "Sir we can repair your phone".
I told them that they have been repairing my phone for 10 years and
it never worked.

Why waste money on that if you are happy without a cellphone.

I refused to buy one for years but broke down when I was still using dial-up
connection on my computer and was missing phone calls.

main reason i keep the landline is if you have any long conversations, chances are you will end up going over your alloted minutes and keeping cellphones against your face for longer than 20 minutes or so is apparently fairly dangerous.

also, like others said, emergencies. sure they are few and far inbetween but remember that 3 day blackout 8 years ago? your cell would of died and you;d have nothing.

A few years ago I moved down the beach a couple of miles. The landline number that I had for close to 20 years could not be moved with me. Unbelieveable in this day and age. So I let it go. I've got cell, MagicJack and Skype and that's enough.

I have a land line and I run my Bell Fibe services through it. The last person I'd listen to is a rep from my cable company.

Edit: I though I'd be banned by now because I'm obviously insane.

Yes, I am in the country and he did suggest a old school style phone. :-)

Has anyone else on here just completely cut off their home land line and is only using their mobile?

yup, 6 or 7 years ago. No need for a landline

In short, if one is going to rely on a land line for emergencies, use a traditional corded phone, not a wireless set and/or answering machine combos.

There is enough electricity in a phone line to ring/power the old rotary phones. Whenever my parents would lose electricity during a storm my engineer father would always call to remind me of this.

We haven't had a land line in about ten years. We all have cell phones, and our home alarm doesn't use a land line either. Of course we can also call over the Internet too.

Why would we need a forth line into the house?

My land line is well established for my printing co. So I will probably have it forever.

Have a cell phone I use when away from the house.
