If he had insurance he could get it fixed but sense he doesn't have insurance or the $30k he just has to deal with it.

I think your friend should look for another doctor or consider medical tourism to Thailand or similar. There are a lot of options which are more economical than the inflated prices the American insurance industry has caused.

I had an extensive battery of allergy tests done a few years back. It cost me $800. No idea what they charged non-cash patients, but $20k seems unusually steep.

Even if you sometimes have to spend $30k, if you spend $6k a year for insurance or you just suck it up and fix the $30k problem when it comes, $30k is still probably less than $6k multiplied by every year of your life. Especially when your operation probably gets denied if you ever let coverage drop. If you can't do $30k, even on a payment plan, then you almost certainly can't consistently do $6k or more a year.

A: Universal health care.

You people argue whether health insurance should be mandatory or not while the rest of the civilized world accepts that being in good health is not a privilege, but something that everyone should have access to.

You can go on bickering now.

Universal healthcare is deeply not the same thing as forcing people to buy insurance which may or may not cover what they need, when they may or may not have access to the proper doctors etc. If we were spending money on clinics or forgiving student loans for doctors who go into areas of practice we need or underserved regions etc. .... well, that would be very very different from just forcing another insurance industry bailout.

same with health.. am i worried about a $5000 dr bill? no.. i am worried about the possibility that i may have something happen that becomes a million dollar bill..

does paying $3000 a year for health insurance let me sleep at night? yes it does..

dont get me wrong, i feel for the people that cant afford health insurance and the govt needs to figure out some happy medium..

but just because paying insurance is an inconvenience or a person wants to keep that money to spend on toys is not acceptable to me, especially when my tax money has to go to that persons er visit because they dont have or want to get turned down by a primary care physician....

.

It sounds to me like your peace of mind is expensive, but I wholeheartedly support your right to spend your money on whatever you want, even if it sounds a bit profligate to me.

We need to educate people on how to find doctors. We need to get more doctors in underserved neighborhoods. We need to encourage more doctors to go into primary care. We need to have more urgent cares to take the pressure off of emergency rooms.

I do not have insurance and your taxes are not covering my ER visits. I go to top doctors and choose who I want to see and I get as many second opinions as I want and I don't have to ask any insurance or government paperpushers for permissions to get medical care.

The state can mandate if you drive a car you must indemnify the public of any statutorily imposed financial responsibly for liability damages -- auto insurance or post a cash bond with the state to self insure. OK, you can walk and driving an automobile is a privilege not a right.

Having society pay vis-a-vis government Medicaid reimbursement to hospitals and other healthcare providers for your (more serious) medical expenses when you have no insurance, or the ability to pay, is your constitutional right I suppose?

You have the money to pay and can post a cash bond guaranteeing that ($100K?), or;
Your constitutional right is to make someone else pay your expenses, or;
You have purchased some healthcare insurance, or;
You are excluded for reason of preexisting condition from purchasing any insurance (eat shit and die clause) ...

Which is it going to be?
I don't want to pay for your medical expenses if you can pay for your own healthcare.
If you cannot pay you will have go on welfare (relief) get Medicaid or Social Security Disability Insurance making my tax burden greater -- someone must pay ...

You have a responsibility to pay for your own health and well being.
Why should I pay for you if you get sick without insurance?

You should unplug the keyboard and go spend some time with your son, play bridge or just get out the house and away from the PC. Your days are numbered at your age, you think you would be trying to enjoy life while you can instead of being a 24/7 online troll at the age of 70. :helpme
