School - Switch To Mobile Applications or Stay With Web Development?

I've been teaching myself everything I needed to know in order to conduct business online for the past 12 years. I decided to go back to school and I'm about to start my second semester as a web development major. It's a breeze, I'm just relearning things I know and have forgot, improving techniques, and finding out better ways to do things. But, as I browse through my course schedule I found myself wondering if it's the right move, to take subjects that I already have a strong knowledge of just for the credits, or should I move into a new major, mobile application development?

What do you all think? Obviously mobile is booming, and will continue to grow. Is this the perfect time to change my major and get into the mobile field? Or stay with what I know and improve my skills?

I would appreciate your thoughts!

Some of the web dev stuff will translate, but if you're able to focus on Mobile Applications...I'd go with it.

Where are you going to school?

You are all saying what I'm thinking.

I saw that as well, the programming courses seem to start out exactly the same. I'm going to a local community college for what I hope to be a full four semesters, and then transfer to a 4 year school, to save some money.

I wanted to do something new, so I'm studying Digital Cinematography.

You should check out Full Sail. They've got a Mobile Dev program that's a full Bachelor's in a little over 2.5 years. They will probably take your transfer credits too.

You get a nice new Macbook Pro, iPad and Android phone for classes and development.

I got 2/3 of my tuition covered by grants.

Thank you for the link. I was checking them out, and they would definitely be worth considering. They are accredited, and apparently have some cutting edge programs. I wish I was in Florida though, check out the pictures of their campus from wikipedia!

That place looks awesome!

One disappointment I saw with a course I could have taken during the Fall was a professor using an HTML 4 textbook. Not that the textbook would be considered deprecated, but I thought for sure they would want to advance with the subject they are teaching.

The campus is awesome. They have a backlot studio for their film program that consists of 19 buildings/studios. It's pretty fucking impressive. I would prefer to be there myself, but the online course setup is pretty nice. I can work when I want to.

Definitely worth checking into. They helped me get a bunch of money. In the end, my $62k degree will costs just a little under $20k. And being a student in the industry has already proven to be beneficial as I've spent 8 weeks this summer working on 2 independent feature films...in a paid capacity too

Good luck.
