In terms of reliability, go with Asus. Avoid HP.

Samsung looks nice, hp with similar specs are cheaper. Dell are solid, but are the new machines any good?

I'm looking to buy a laptop myself - I've heard that these three are good brands :
1. Sony Vaio
2. Dell
3. HP
My thoughts are in the order I showed, but still I'm not convinced which one should work better for me. In all the cases it has to have bigger HDD / for porn pics and clips - I get these from some of you - fast processor and huge RAM - I do some animations from time to time and to have bigger screen. I guess something around $1500 - $2000 is the price for a good laptop / I'm not interested of Blue Ray and what so ever things and ... I can't afford MacBook Pro :-(

They say: Asus, Acer and other similar jumps with many problems - from the functionality to hardware and so on /of course the other brands also gives problems, but not so often as Asus and Acer. Toshiba is one of the brands that some guys prefer to use but I don't find them sexy as DELL / for example.

So everything depends on your budget and requirements for work.

Go with Toshiba or Sony. Those are the top two PC laptop manufacturers in terms of reliability. Asus is good but you'll pay. Amd or Intel.. doesn't matter unless you need that tiny bit of extra punch an Intel gives.. but not always worth the extra money. Just make sure it has lots of ram, at least 4 gigs and a good graphics chip.

Buy a mac, it'll never die.
There's so little software made for macs so you wont be able to use it so it will never break!

don' buy HP if you plan to use it with additional monitor through HDMI, with HDMI signal, GPU is used more heavily than otherwise and it will cause GPU heating much more, in my case overheating it and burning video card that I can only use standard vga drivers now on it w/o additional monitor, cooling platform didn't help btw.

I took mine completely apart when it started getting too hot, thought maybe had too much dust around heat sink, to my surprise it wasn't the case. problem was that both CPU and GPU shared the same heat sink but GPU didn't directly touched and pressed against it, there were around 3mm space between them filled with some foamy material, unlike CPU which was directly pressed against heat sink.
stupid HP hardware design made me to take it all apart including monitor side in order to even get to see heat sink.

other than this gpu cooling issue HPs are great.
don't know if HP managed to fix it in recent years. I bought mine in 2008

I've had trouble with almost every brand of laptops I've ever used. But I've found the most reliable to be Lenovo, best lifetime value.

Those DV series laptops were crap. There was a class action lawsuit because of the issue you just described. I've seen the solder balls on the GPU completely melt down and either short on neighboring pads on the mobo or lose contact with the pads entirely. If they short the computer is toast. If they just broke the solder joint it's fixable.

I've fixed a bunch of them over the last year or so. The only way I have been able to fix them is by reballing the GPU and then putting a shim under the heatsink with some arctic silver. Lots of people claim to have fixed it by putting a penny under the heatsink but that's a little too thick IMO.

it run good for me for most part (1.5-2 years) even with VGA cable to secondary monitor, I even remember we had this discussion couple years back where I was very happy with my HP and you telling exact same thing about class action suit, etc.. once I went HDMI, after two month my GPU was partially toast (only standard vga drivers and no secondary monitor). HDMI to TV never worked for me on it. it would just freeze laptop after 30 sec. every time I tried it. Now, I'm in your camp, I won't look at HPs again for a long time

I love acers, we have 3 of them. I bought a macbook pro mid 2010 and I didnt like it and bought an acer timeline. Its a great little laptop. Im rewriting the macbook pro hard drive as we speak so then it can be put up on craigslist. Ive tried it and I prefer Windows.
