Renew expired domain when you don't know the host...?

Hey, I have a family member who has a small business and a website for his brick and mortar. He is a web retard so he hired a guy to do is website for him years ago. The guy has disappeared but the sites been up and running for awhile with no issues... I just went to check it out for him to give him an offer on how I could redo it for him much nicer and the site was down. I check his domain registry and it expired on 6-14-11 so its I guess in the process of transfering ownership back... he has no idea where its hosted or where he got domain from so I can't figure out how to get in and try to renew it before its assigned back.

The only thing I can find is yahoo domains is listed as the tech contact on the whois...

Any suggestions how to snatch it up for him so I can get his site live and save him from the possibility someone else may steal his domain?

If he didn't get any warning emails that isn't a good sign. Sometimes, small web businesses or freelance designers will register the domain names under their own name. It becomes troublesome as if you piss them off or leave them, they can hold it hostage. If that company registered the domain name under their name you will have to contact the registrar.

I have come across a number of new clients who decided to stop using their old designer and had their name held hostage, or like yourself, the designer disappeared and they were left not knowing what to do.

They will attempt to contact the owner who they have listed. If they can't reach him, I think there is some documentation proving you are the business owner you might be able provide them to possibly get it back.I am sure it varies by registrar and with the domain pending delete etc., who knows. Network solutions works in this way but I don't know about the other places.

If you fail to get the domain name directly from the registrar, you should look at www.snapnames.com. Buy a domain snap which basically attempts to grab a domain name right as it becomes available.

If the domain name isn't that sought after, you have a good chance of snagging it. If someone else has a snap for that name and their snap beats yours to registering the domain, your s.o.l. Most times you wont even get the money back for the snap. Its like 40 - 60 bucks usually. At that point in time you could fight to get the domain back from the new buyer if you have the biz name trademarked but that can get expensive.

check out http://www.pool.com/viewlist.aspx . Uncheck the tlds that do not apply to you and type in the domain name. With luck the domain will show up with the date it becomes available.

        Best of luck with this.

Thanks for the suggestions... I will try this... It is registered under my family members name so thankfully that part won't be an issue if I could just find who the registrar is.

It looks like it's registered at yahoo domains.

The top part of the whois will show where it's registered for sure. It's the section above the registrant, at the very top of the whois results. It looks like this:

all the xxxxs are where my family members personal info is

Also its not like a hot web domain that will get scooped up asap but its pretty unique that I could see some people buying domains could grab it or theres also the possibility of any competitors who go check and see the site down, know about websites, see the domain open and buy it.

                        VeriSign WHOIS

Have your relative contact the registrar immediately before the domain comes out of the Grace Renewal Period and changes to Redemption Period or it will cost more to restore it. If their name is listed as the Registrant or Administrative Contact, there shouldn't be much of a problem with the registrar. After renewal, be sure to update the WHOIS to reflect current and accurate info. Domains can be cancelled for inaccurate WHOIS data.

If the relative's working information is listed in the email or phone part of the whois, contact yahoo domains where it is registered and go about verifying.

I assume you do not have login to the domain account [obviously].

This is a ongoing issue with YaHoo hosted web sites and domain registration, contact them, tell them the story. They have, in my experience, been quite good at providing a solution.

Why in the fuck would you come to GFY for a solution? Go straight to the source 1st.

Yahoo charges $35 per year for their .com renewals, they will be more than pleased to help out and retain you or your family member as an appreciated high paying client.
