what the fuck were you eating? rancid seal meat?

You were probably going through carb withdrawals.. liver has nothing to do with that, it's the body adjusting to you not having all the sugars in your system.

*no booze (yes i cheated and always paid for it cuz booze makes me forget not to eat french fries)
*no more than 1300 calories/day (was told no more than 1100 but couldnt do it)
*workout 5 days/week and take long walks/bike rides the days you skip

on lowering the calories to not exceed a certain amount, the only...only...only way it worked for me was very boring but i had to eat the same exact things every day unless i wanted to count them up like a freak. i am not good at keeping track of what i eat or counting them up so i just came up with the foods i could have all day that totalled 1300 calories and ate that every day. small meals/snacks spaced 2-3 hours apart.

included in my tiresome diet were eggs, tuna, apple, salad, 1c raw veggies, fish or chicken

drink nothing but water or green tea....NOTHING ELSE!

also, don't eat past 6pm

good luck girl, you can do it :thumbsup

Damn girl, that is good but you have to have some serious self control. I could do it but I would not be able to follow it too long. How long did you have to be on it before you lost the lbs?

The main problem with me is that I need flavor and diversity so I'm first going to try phase one of South Beach for a couple weeks and see how that treats me but as soon as the weight scale levels and I stop dropping weight I'll have to go more drastic.

This may sound counter-intuitive, but make sure you never get a hungry feeling. When you starve yourself, your body goes into starvation mode and its more likely to hang on to those extra pounds. That doesn't mean you need to eat a whole meal. Just snack on good, fat burning foods. Almonds, salmon, sardines -- and make sure you get some olive oil every day. It's good fat that actually helps get rid of bodyfat.

Drink a gallon of water per day.

Work some HIIT cardio into your workouts a few times per week. I've just started doing Tabata Protocol about 3 weeks ago, and those stubborn pounds have been melting away. It's only 4 minutes(or more) but will really tax your body and amp up your metabolism for the rest of the day.

http://www.tabataprotocol.com/ You can use almost any exercise for Tabata intervals, but sprinting works best. It will KILL you.

Get more sleep.

DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF. It's the worst thing you can do, and so counterproductive to losing wieght. Focus more on getting the daily maintenance calories you need(good calories), and burning more during the workouts. You can't avoid exercise if you want to get rid of "that stubborn last 10 pounds".

It sounds like you want an effortless, tasty way to lose weight. It doesn't work like that. If you're not willing to work and suffer a bit, then you won't get there.

haha, I should have never even answered then. I doubt anyone asking that question is going to listen to sound advice that will actually be safe and work.

PR_Glen 06-15-2011 09:23 AM

if you are eating only 1100-1300 calories a day you may as well not workout at all because you wont burn shit from it... as bronco67 said your body shuts down if you starve yourself.. so the only thing that will happen when you work muscles with such a low calorie intake is burn through muscle, which includes your heart...so if your looking to avoid heart failure maybe you should reconsider the calorie intake...

body needs fuel or it will break down like a car...

I'd say if I was looking to shed a ton of weight, then the extreme yet safe diets are the way to go. I only need 10 lbs and I don't need them gone in two weeks. Sure I want to steadily lose weight and I can do it by cutting half of the crap that I am currently eating but I guess I'm just looking for something that I know I can stick to longer term.

The problem with some diets is that they are so restrictive that once you reach your desired weight, you go back to unhealthy habits.

when i did that PSMF 12 day fast i started that thread about a few weeks ago, i learned that one can go 12 days on this sort of ultra-restricted diet before the metabolism goes into serious shutdown, and that's for peeps with very lof bf, can go longer than 12 days (bt not too much longer) with higher bf %s.

hey good luck man!

re: the mental v. physical issue you mentioned.

it boils down to making the decision. that's it. tony286's post was dead on- what's more important to you?

tony, how much have you lost now, 200+ pounds? how long have you been with your diet, 2 years-ish?

tony made a decision and that's all there is to that. :)

Peter Romero 06-15-2011 10:28 AM

Consistency not just intensity is the key to everything.

Get a dog and walk him 3 times a day for 20-40 minutes each time. Just try to cheat on this workout and clean up piss and shit all over your house. Dogs = best trainers in the world. Add a push-up, weight, crunch workout for 45 minutes a day alternating muscle groups. Hardcore intervals only work if you are already in shape and/or exercising regularly so that you avoid injury which will HALT all progress.

Diet: If you can't grow it or kill it then don't eat it. The less man touches food the better it is for you. Drink lots of water. Only drink black coffee with honey as an energy booster. Starbucks milkshakes are 600 to 1300 calories EACH!!! In fact, fuck sugar altogether - only eat 1 "treat" once a week after you earned and deserve it. Keep your meals small and more frequent to keep your energy up and your fat storage down.

I lost 70 pounds in the last 5 months doing this. I lost over 105 pounds total in one year experimenting with diferent shit with varying results until I found my magic formula. The bottom line is consistency. Anyone can go all out balls to the wall for a short period, the key is to keep going. That's my :2 cents: Gotta go workout now.

Oh and BTW - nothing worthwhile is easy. Pain is growth. Anyone tells you diferent is selling something.

OneHungLo 06-15-2011 11:07 AM

Tabata Protocol is great and I do it one or twice a week along with weights.

hey, do y'all think that tabata interval would work running in place? sprint in place 20 seconds, jog in place 20 seconds?

Falabala 06-15-2011 11:21 AM

Hmmm, I'm probably late to the party, but I'm currently following my own harsh diet regime (And definitely not recommended):

1 portion of white fish, or a chicken breast filet a day (Can add pepper, salt, etc if desired)
increased water intake from the regular diet
30 minutes a day of intensive aerobic exercise
Alcohol (in spirit form like vodka. No beer or cocktails) is permitted.

The fat is practically melting away (along with my body and life)!

Then again, it's not as if I had money in the first place to splurge on food... that works, too

i hear ya.

i've got a torn pcl in one knee and can't run in any real sense. i can run in place with a knee brace, some super cushioney running shoes and a couple yoga mats for more cush.

but i also like going places for entertainment, not for work. :-) i've found i am more consistent when i can exercise at home. :)

I have no doubt you could go that long, but when you started that you were already in really good shape and had a low body fat % and probably a high metabolism to begin with. Almost everyone else, especially the ones asking about weight loss, are carb fiends to begin with. When the average eating person goes from one extreme to the other in that short of a time the body will lock up and go into survival mode much faster than what it took you.

I recall you mentioning that you did next to no exercise during that fasting phase, even walking shortly was tiring for you? What would happen if you tried working out 5 days a week while doing that fast? That's the point I was trying to make anyway.

I've been on a modified Lean gains intermittent fasting routine for about 3 months now. Eating during an 8 hour window. With the only working out is 1.5 to 2 hours of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu 3 to 5 times a week. Last time I counted, I don't go over 2200 calories a day. On cheat days, I might hit 3000 calories, but they are few and far between.

The human body was made to survive off of limited calories. My walking weight before I started was between 250 to 260, it's now 220 to 230's. I'm never hungry, nor do I get hunger pains eating the way I do.

Here's a great site that explains the nuances of IF.

It works for anything, as long as you go full intensity. You can 20/20 to start, but try to work up to 20/10 for max effectiveness. That rest period of 10 should be not much motion at all.

Try burpees also. But with your knee problem that might be an issue. I have a right knee nagging injury, and I do a lot of eliptical and rowing. Low impact and gets the job done. You can "Tabata" those also.

I tried this the other day, and had to lay down gasping for air for about 5 minutes.

huge difference between 2200 calories a day and 1100 ;) I was referring to the 1100.

I agree that the body was made to be able to survive those circumstances but we aren't talking about survival, we are talking about being healthy here. Just because you survive the extremes doesn't mean you aren't damaging your heart in the process.

for the record i don't think your diet is extreme, it's pretty sensible from what you have said. Thanks for the link.

bronco67 06-15-2011 12:44 PM

I don't see how calorie deprivation is good for you under any circumstances. That's why this HCG thing seems dangerous. 500 calories per day?

Dr OZ knows his shit, and if he says something is bunk, then its true.

My bad Glen, I didn't notice the 1100 part. :(

One has to base their input calories on what they burn daily. I'm actually having this argument with my Ex on Facebook right now, as she's nothing but skin and bones and thinks it's great.

took longer than it should have due to cheating :1orglaugh the booze would throw it off the worst and that was only a weekend occurance (that would have a ripple effect for 2 or 3 more days). South Beach is an awesome diet and basically what I had posted for food...small portions eaten often that include lean meats, fresh veggies and fruits and lots of water. don't go too heavy on the fruits at first because of the sugar but later, the fruit will help keep your system functioning healthy. add in movement you didnt have before outside of the gym... i added dancing it out at lunchtime to tech mixes and an extra walk each evening. the little extra really helped. if you dont already, just add in one more stroll for the baby at a certain time of day you can commit to, he will love it too. set a reasonble goal so you dont get frustrated and throw in the towel..give yourself 5 weeks and be stoked when it happens faster :)

Just 3 ingredients to no-will-power weight loss!
Results in 1 week!

jimmycooper 06-15-2011 03:19 PM

Simple. Just try to get 30-35 grams of fiber per day.

It works because high fiber foods are healthy and tend to be filling, so you won't get hungry very often. Not only that, but trying to eat more of something is psychologically less difficult than trying to eat less.

Combine that with 15-20 minutes of high intensity interval training.

Then adjust as necessary. If you're working out more, set a goal for protein intake.

JosephFM 06-15-2011 03:37 PM

Just make sure to take one of these pills with every meal http://www.myalli.com and shit your way to a healthy lifestyle.

10 Burpees
10 Squat Jumps
10 Mountain Climbers

30 second rest.

these are insane exercises- p90x includes these exercises in their plyometrics routine, only 30 second blasts though. no probs with my knee, i just make sure and land toes 1st, using my natural puma-like reflexes.

tabata style looks serious. i wonder if you can actually burn a significant # of calories from 4 minutes of exercise though? from what i've read about HIIT, while effective, it still must be done in that fat burning window, 25 minutes minimum.

HIIT increases your VO2 max. You won't burn as many calories in that 4 minutes as you will with a long, slow cardio session, but your metabolism will be amped up for the rest of the day, and it conditions your system to be a fat burning machine -- to make your other cardio and weightlifting session burn more. So it's an overall boost, from what I understand.

You're right though, ideally, you want to string together a few 8 round sessions equaling at least 15 to 20 minutes.

http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/a.../a/VO2_max.htm

Also, another good HIIT article

BTW, there's lots of Tabata timer apps for iPhone or Android.

can you imagine the shape you'd be in when you can string together 8 of these?

The Bible's also spot on regarding NO FAT (Leviticus) and also NO EATING OF BLOOD. Both of these cause high cholesterol.

The thing is, if you could do 8 rounds it probably means you're not going full intensity. Actually, I think a little goes a long way with the Tabata stuff.

One is good if you go max. I've done 3 rounds at the most, but I have to admit I wasn't going full steam by the end. It was definitely a good workout.

Sprints are the worst. Just killer.

isn't a combo ideal? do 5-10 minutes of HIIT then go lower intensity for 20 minutes or so?

It works for anything, as long as you go full intensity. You can 20/20 to start, but try to work up to 20/10 for max effectiveness. That rest period of 10 should be not much motion at all.

Try burpees also. But with your knee problem that might be an issue. I have a right knee nagging injury, and I do a lot of eliptical and rowing. Low impact and gets the job done. You can "Tabata" those also.

THose are some SERIOUS burpees. Works out your arms, your chest, your legs, and lots of cardio. I'm gonna give it a shot. I've been doing only running and push ups and sit ups right now.
