Anyone own an e55/s55/s65 AMG?

These cars are all in the $20-$26k range now. Unbelievable! But there are like 20 different motors to choose from (v8, v8 supercharged, v12 biturbo, ...). Which one is the best and/or fastest?

You can get an s65 for $26K?

That would be a hell of a deal.

Oops the (older) s65's are more like ~$37k. Although heres one for 30: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb

Still a hell of a deal for something that was $190,000

the s65 will pass everything except a petrol station.

Honestly, i woudln't get a benz from that era. Benz was great in the 80s, early 90s, etc, but in the early 2000s they were cheaply made crap. They are just now starting to regain quality.

The fastest is the s65 but the s55 (w220) is the one of the AMG´s that is most frequently sold. the engine is reliable and as far as i know it is the one with less maintenance.
go with the s55,you´ll have a great car which is fast enough, the s65 isn´t much faster.

I had a 300C SRT-8, so I'm used to driving a fast boat and don't mind really I love fast sedans, no one expects something so large to move like that with people comfortably in the back seat pointing out the window laughing at whoevers losing lol.

I see all over the 'net people saying the 2000 era AMG's were garbage and others saying there's nothing wrong with them.. they are hand built aren't they? What kind of problems are there?

cheap to buy, not to fix or maintain.
you are buying an expensive car, the repairs/parts will still mirror the original cost of the car.

Good luck trying to repair a V12 Twin Turbo with a ton of computers and shit on the cheap.

BTW, if your ABC suspension gets a leak or takes a shit -- $8K to fix.

Great cars, but I wouldn't own one out of warranty period.

Ex-cars include:

SL55
E55
SL63

Just picked up an 08 M6. Looked at some of the AMG cars, but they were pretty boring to drive and a little too comfy feeling

My wife has had two Mercedes is a row, and both are total crap. Both bought new as well... thank god for the warranty :p

You can get an E55 pretty cheap, under 20k. There were a bunch of pullied/exhaust/tuned E55 videos floating around racing muscle cars (and 03-04 Cobras which have essentially the same motor concept) and the MB's were blowing the doors off the Mustangs making similar power.

I know I raced one with my stock+nitrous 01 SS and the guy didn't stand a chance. That car was a factory freak in itself, and with the bottle on top of it...

I think if you're looking for a nice car that's quick BUT you don't plan on driving it that often or don't mind paying for repairs, those aren't too bad.

Otherwise, I would never buy a used one as a driver or even a weekend car once it's out of warranty. With big power comes big repairs at big costs. It cost me a few grand every couple months to fix my CHEVY, and parts for those are 1/8th of the cost of a forced induction benz.

MBs have trannys made of glass btw. never buy a used one without warranty... actually never buy a used mb period. they just dont hold up well to daily driving let alone abusive/spirited driving. after 50k warranty is up they're paperweights

Yes... I don't know what the fuck everyone is talking about regarding problems with AMG's.

Maybe the lower end cars, but I've never even heard people complain as much about problems on AMGs as I just did in this thread, on the Mercedes forums.

The transmissions in the 2003+ E55/S55/SL55, etc are actually bullet proof.

Ton of people here talking about the really old Mercedes as if it makes a difference. The 2003+ cars are great with little problems and nicely built. Though, as I said, I wouldn't own one out of warranty as IF there are any repairs needed (and these are OLD CARS NOW, so what do you expect?) the repair will be expensive.

Back in 2005, my 2004 SL55 had a leak in one of the suspension struts and I saw the bill for warranty claim to the manufacturer and it was like around $8K.
These cars all have the pneumatic suspension, so its a risk they all will have.

Lol this is what I mean, so many people on either side saying they've either heard of everyone having problems or heard of no one having problems.

For a hand built car with 70k-90k miles I don't expect to have too many problems.

Get an 06 M5, I'm sure you could find one pretty cheap... with a lot less miles than the cars you are posting as well :P

I was kind of doing what you're doing to when I bought the M6. I found one car a ton cheaper than the going price and told my wife "I can get an M6 for $xx,xxx". When all was said and done, I bought a car $15,000 more than I thought I was going to spend lol

Yeah the e60 M5's are cheap as well, in the $30,000's, but there are chipped and pullied e55's maybe with a few other bolt ons breaking into 10's at the track, I doubt the M5 without some serious modding or forced induction would come close to that.

If you plan on driving like you stole it then the AMG cars will break just like the Caddy CTS-V's have done that were modded and prodded to run like scalded apes. I have had performance sedans and the ones with the least issues with spirited driving most of the time are the Caddies and they are cheaper. I know you will get all the gold digger poon with a MB or a BMW but they are catching on to the Cadillac drivers. Even if you buy a CTS-V thats 3 years old you dont take the immediate depreciation for signing the contract you get a smoking deal and most have extendable Caddy warranties tha6 are better than your standard Chevy for service work. We bought a SRX4 AWD V8 and paid $59k but the next month you couldnt trade it in on a new one for more than $32k-35k, its the same way with the DTS/DHS you can get a $50k+ ride when new for under $10k all day in Texas.

Very true... but worthless power on the street.

I've had a few cars before the M6 with 500+ hp / 550+ ftlbs on the dyno and they are useless on the street. Even the M6 stock as it stands will just blow the tires out in the first few gears on the street... that's with dyno numbers in the 400s hp / 300s ftlbs.

Unless you have very deep pockets I wouldn't be changing pulleys and messing with the tune on AMG cars.

Try to find an E55 and 06 M5 to drive, tell me what you think of both

PS: CTS-V newest gen is a good choice too... pretty cheap if you get the first year production cars. Amazing bang for the buck and take mods well. Also just a Chevy motor, so cheap to work on.

Oh yeah... don't get caught up on power either...

Some of the AMG and Audi S/RS cars are VERY heavy... sometimes almost 1,000 lb over similar rivals.

My last car was an S4... which actually weighed MORE than the M6, with 160 less hp and a much smaller platform lol

Here's a great example of a car getting bloated:
E30 M3 - 2,865 lb / 235hp
E36 M3 - 3,219 lb / 240hp
E46 M3 - 3,415 lb / 333hp
E92 M3 - 3,704 lb / 414hp

Although the newest M3 is nearly 200hp stronger than the original, most consider the original the best over all M3. Meaning it's the most fun car to drive.
