DreamHost - Quick (Bad) Review - GoFuckYourself.com

Decided to try out a dreamhost VPS, the free trial is nice and even though they don't offer cpanel their custom cpanel is relatively intuitive...

The problem with DreamHost is their support. It looks like they have live support but it's actually bullshit. They actually have little to no support for things you might expect from a 'managed' account. Nearly everything you might need done (I personally needed some sites transferred from one account to another, and ioncube loder installed, which were extremely basic support requests on other hosts) they won't do. They'll simply reference their wiki and tell you to do it yourself.

http://www.dreamhost.com/vps-support.html This is what they advertise as support but it's not what you get. Maybe their support is good if you're having some actual server problems or something like that.

My advice is unless you're looking for a VPS that you will actually manage yourself (which there might be cheaper options in that case) DO NOT go with dreamhost.

I'm used to having at least one dedicated server but I don't need one right now. I have no idea who is a good host for a VPS server. Looked around and decided to give DreamHost a try.

Most companies say they have "live support". Nothing pisses people off more than calling tech support in the middle of the night when your stuff is down and not getting an answer. What you do is figure out where they are located, and then call them at 2am or 3am their time and see how quickly they pick up.

Hey, test something for me. Drop a cinderblock on your foot and get back to me on whether it causes any pain. Many people have told me it causes a great deal of pain but why listen to them? I know you are up for the challenge.

Sorry to hear about your current situation. I can't comment on dreamhost as I have never used them BUT based on your current experiences maybe it is time to rethink your managed server and where it is hosted :-)

Seems like others have a good opinion though...

I pay $10/year of unlimited data unlimited bandwidth hosting from dreamhost. They have no security (upload an encrypted php shell and have access to their whole server) but other than that I like 'em.
