it all depends on the island you want to go...

If you want a real beautiful, fun and 100% SAFE destination... go Aruba

(edit) I just realize no place in 100% safe, so let's change that into REALLY SAFE

I'd say go to the Cayman Islands. If you want mad fun and danger go to the Philippine Islands.

St Martin, Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire (if you like diving) all good choices..

I never been to St Lucia so I wouldn't know about the situation over there...

Not sure about a tsunami in the Caribbean. I lived there for over 10 years, between St Martin/St Maarten, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominican Republic, St Barths and even some time on Saba.
Depending on what you are looking for, there may be many choices.
-St Martin is cool if you want a mix of nightlife/casinos/restaurants and beaches.
-Anguilla is great if you just want peace and quiet on stunning beaches.
-St Barths is great for boutique hotels, luxury and shopping/restaurants.
-Guadeloupe and Martinique have some magnificent scenery that could almost rival Hawaii but the hotels/food and shopping sucks for the most part and they hate tourists.
-Dominican Republic is a hit or miss, toward Punta Cana there are some great places but you have to be careful once you set out of the tourist area.
-Saba is ok for a couple of days, better bring reading material as there is pretty much nothing to do beside some nature's watching and some walking.
-You have St Kitts and Nevis, somewhat interesting but nothing out of the ordinary.
-Antigua is like St Martin but much less to do and see.
-US Virgin Islands have nice places to visit but it is plagued by crime, in St Thomas you can walk from a $1k a night hotel room to a crack house in less time than it takes a premature ejaculator to cum...
-Barbados is a little fun if you are found of British style old houses and nice beaches, but it's mostly expensive and really not worth the extra cost.
-Jamaica has great places but it is very unsafe, even worst that the DR.
-St Lucia is cool, nice resorts and nice setting, but a bit on the boring side for the night life and not much outside of the tourist zones.
-Dominica is good if you like nature and wild areas, not many people live there and it is a bit of the beaten track.
-Aruba has some nice beaches and hotels but that's it.
-Curacao is industrial on one side and somewhat touristy on the other side. I wouldn't want to go back there.
-Bonaire is pretty cool especially if you like diving.

All in all, I would choose St Martin. It has a bit of everything, the only issue is that it is small and crowded, so unless you want to go to hotels like La Samanna which will cost you an arm and 2 legs, you will not get peace. But you will get cheap, very cheap booze, dirt cheap cigarettes and if you are so inclined cheap and mostly beautiful legal "Hoes"...

We were gonna do St. Lucia this year and stay in Soufriere but chose St. Maarten instead because there seemed to be more to do.

I loved St. Croix when we went.

Japan is not in the Carribean ...

Most islands are safe ...
Each of them have some bad neighborhoods : just don`t go

Most dangerous : Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados ...
Others are fine ...
Just don`t flash your bling...

There are a few more islands on my Caribbean list but after the while ePass fiasco I haven desire to go to St. Kitts. Sounds silly I'm sure, I think I just got so sick of hearing St. Kitts.

Actually it was probably typhoon, which is the same thing as a hurricane only it spins in the opposite direction.

Al, how the hell you been? I haven't seen you post in a while.

Nevis is the best, but I have to say Barbados was equally as good. It all depends on what you're looking for and what you want to do.

Every island is dangerous if you're out in the ghetto late night carousing around like an idiot.

I'd pick an island based on what you want to do and find one that has a lot of that -- diving, golf, sailing, beach lounging, high end spa resorts, etc. and base it on that. The weather isn't the same from island to island as far as rainfall amount/humidity/temperature since it will depend on whether its a windward or leeward island.

Some are way more expensive than others as well, mostly due to the type of non-residents that hang out there. St Barths is on the upper end of expensive, Turks & Caicos much more reasonable but still very nice, for instance.

St Maarten, Curacao and Antigua are three of my favorites. Aruba and St Thomas are two of my least favorites.

Curacao? Sorry, I couldn't read you through all the smog of the oil refinery. *COUGH* *GACK* I also don't recommend swimming in the chemical and oil spills that are the 'natural beaches', and the ridiculous high prices. And the people here are some of the laziest and most arrogant and pretentious fucks you'll ever meet.

As far as islands that I can recommend... Dominican Republic and Aruba are mostly americanized. But if you like quiet and lack of technology, Bonaire is probably your pick.

Edit; Oh, just for some extra advice. If you like the island a lot, so much that you want to live there. DON'T.
