Stupid? Google offered to buy Groupon and they said no, so they made their own, that wasn't the case with Foursquare / Facebook

I thought Google had a history of trying to recreate other companies ideas and not going anywhere with them.

I dunno. It might be successful if they implement it correctly. Google is notorious for abandoning development on projects like this.

While I love the deals, I think about the long term effect these type of programs will have on consumer loyalty and branding.

Personally, I'm not going back to the same pedicure place, I'm going to where my Groupon has a deal for.

It's the retail equivalent of tubes!!11!!1@1!@$%

I don't think Groupon are going anywhere, as mentioned above G have a history of doing things half-assed, and just because they're big, doesn't mean they're best. Look at their fail with social so far.

I don't deny Groupon won't go anywhere, especially in this economy. What I think business owners will find is that the retention of those Groupon purchases isn't too hot. The person is just waiting for the next business', same type of business' Groupon.

Its not about retention, its about volume biz. Lets say you sell 500 sessions for pedicure with reservations required. You stick them in to your empty spots and gain whatever $$$ you can. Its not like it "all sold out" places go for this groupon thing. Sure you want them to come back but you have to keep in mind its the mcfrugal crowd.

exactly groupon is really nothing but an expansion of the hotels/expedia model out of an existing niche.

same benefit

btw you missed the list building benefit

same rules apply you are now on their mailing list and will keep getting offers from the chains you decided to by from.

You do realize they ask you if you want to book again when you leave and usually at another discounted rate?

Yeah, initial traffic is great, but when you are offering 50% off and then have to give Groupon anywhere from 10-50% (based on the method you use) then you really want to rely on the retention.

I was reading up on Groupon from a business perspective last night and it was interesting. They do encourage you to gather emails, stay in contact with your customers, etc.

They also give some pretty good tools and have this new system where you can set it up all online.

You have to have a store front though to use Groupon. You have to upload a pic of the store when you apply.

I don't think Google will take over Groupon or put it out of business. It will only offer more discounts to customers. I do Living Social too, and many times the same business will do both a Groupon and LS a few weeks apart.

So if you do like the service, you can bet you'll get another deal in your email from them.

I bought NCAA tickets thru them. No, they didn't ask if I wanted to come back. Right now they have Old Navy $20 for $10 .

Tickets like that, no I don't get asked again. But with that, they get you to a game they know you will buy concessions. Or take your kids, etc.

The massage, pedicure service type places do ask you.

I see the value in both, one lady had an ad up needing another therapist because their Groupon generated 810 massages and shit do that every year, you could sustain your business that way.

I am looking more long-term, if/when the economy improves, etc. I worry that it will killing pricing structures and people will expect these services to be 50% off all the time or they just won't buy.

Come on, its not like everyone using groupon and other discount shopping type sites. My wife never bothers to look at the price tag of a shirt. Instead she puts it on and asks me if it looks ok. What am I supposed to say? No? I bet most people that use groupon will only do some of those activities just because it was 50% off. Typical bargain shopper attitude - "they don't have my size, so I'll buy smaller one and lose weight".. And of course that never happens and shirt goes to Salvation Army 2 years later with original tag still on it.
