I recommend finding a respected "run/walk" athletic store where the staff can help you make the decision. I've been using Brooks for the last few years.

Foot Locker

But yeah, any respected sport store or specialized running store will be able to help you selecting a good shoe, that fits you.

Basically, you can have three kind of feet:
1. Normal
2. Flat
3. High arch

Each will need it's own type of shoe, built in support and adjustments. Running long distances in the wrong types of shoes can seriously damage your feet and muscles. You need proper support and it doesn't cost much more.

New Balance (especially if you need a wider toe area for more comfort) or Asics (the Gel ones are great).

I just saw a news story on them, apparently they're flying off shelves. (not sure about that exact brand or model, i am speaking of that style) They look hideous, however I have always enjoyed running shoeless. When I played sports when I was younger, I preferred shoeless because my maneuvering and speed were greatly increased.
