One person was injured yesterday morning when a Hummer crashed into a school bus.

No children were on the Indianapolis Public Schools bus when it collided with the Hummer at Terrace Avenue and Madison Avenue, according to Marion County police.

Police closed Madison Avenue near Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive while firefighters worked to extricate the driver of the SUV out of the vehicle.

The victim was awake and transported to an area hospital.

In middle school a semi style tow truck hit our school bus, side swiped us at about 55mph, right in the front doors... jacked the bus up pretty bad, but not compared to the tow truck. It was missing the entire front end, down to the windshield - just ripped it off.

Them flat back frames on buses are bad ass strong... and some have i-beam cross mounts, they may sound like crap and look like crap, but they actually are very safe for the kids. Not that crap doesn't happen but in most cases, the bus wins, even up against semi's.

Looks like the Hummer's safety features did their job. Crumple zones to absorb the energy from the crash and airbags & seat belts to protect the occupants.

A Smart car doesnt have crumple zones. It wont deform near as much and all that energy from impact is transferred to the occupants.

Amazing how many people dont understand why cars deform as much as they do in a crash.

I stand corrected, the Smart Car has small crumple zones... an improvement over the last time I looked at the European version a few years ago.

i just took the Smart as example because of its size. i actually understand pretty good how crumple zones work, but either the Hummer hit the bus at 50 or 60 mph or more or its crumple zone sucks - because the passenger cell is supposed to stay intact and the massive intrusion of the dashboard you see on the pictures is not supposed to happen with a safely designed car. because the best crumple zone doesn't help when you are crushed between seat, steering wheel and dashboard.
