Well, I have no idea what your budget is, but B&W are the best ever. http://www.bwspeakers.com/

If that is over budget, then I recommend Klipsch. http://www.klipsch.com/

I have a mix of B&W and Klipsch...oh yeah, and some ADS home speakers also. Watching a movie without big sound is useless

tough question...
speakers (at any price) are "beauty is in the ear of the listener"
(an analogy of beauty is in the eye of the beholder)

I have spent megabucks on top end speakers and was less than thrilled. When I installed my first home theater, I had all top of the line stuff, and "other" people thought it sounded great.
I was still less than impressed.

This may help or confuse the heck out of you....
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/index.php

Some good reviews etc...etc..., but, much like GFY, take it with a grain of salt.

For the money, Infinity, B&W and Bose (center speaker only) are available and at least go on sale every once in awhile....
The Sony Dream is pretty good for 999 at Best Buy
(although I do not like, personally, the mid range or sub)

Again, test...listen, and remember to test the whole system (at minimum, the center and front L & R together.
For Dolby 7.1 you may want an "orphan" rear center....

Just buy 5 of those.

You might have to get a second mortgage though.

Only $75,900 USD per pair.

Damn guy has a $20k amp and preamp pushing them (Bryston). Best fucking setup around. He is using an Infinity sub though.

it's not 100 per speaker, it's 100 watt with any channel tested with only one speaker hooked up to teh whole system. My jvc is teh same way, claims 500 watts, but in fine prin says "100 watts per channel tested with one load" At least JVC didn't lie. Only way to get full power is to get an amp that has a certified High Current power supply.

Sometimes they rate them only at 1khz too.

For a more accurate rating they need to test them from 20hz to 20khz with all channels driven and less than 1% distortion.

If an amp doesn't give it's rating under those conditions then they are trying to pull one over on ya.

They always claim weird shit and put teh truth in fine print, or soemtimes, not at all. Which is why I can;t stand sony, A 500 watt sony 5.1 system is really only a 150 watt system.

Speakers always disappoint me. You have to spend $10,000+ on them to start getting close to the 3D clarity you can get from spending $400-$1000 on a pair of headphones.

Sad but true. In my old house I had thousands of dollars worth of audio equipment and it sounded like shit simply because of the room it was in.

No sense in even wasting your money on the high end stuff if you're not willing to do something to fix the problems your listening room will create. You pretty much have to have a dedicated home theater room.

(or you can spend a hundred bucks on headphones)

Well todays speakers are SHIT. nothign but fucking cheap plastic subs and litle gay cubes. Thats why I buy 20 year old speakers, big bulky, loud and FAT! (fat = big bottom). The only way I will buy new speakers in this day and age is if they are full tower boutique such as paradigm fulls, polk audio fulls, etc etc

The speaker in teh background on the black wooden stand is almost 30 years old. Back when they first started using rubber impregnated spiders. The rubber shit is still shiny The dman thing has MEGA low end and very good range.

Teh monster you see in teh foreground is a subwoofer project gone freaky... I went overboard on that one. My neighbours will agree to this, it's fucking PURE EVIL!

Although placement is very critical, I use a Martin Logan / Bryston combination in my theater which works very nicely.

YOu can have the most expensive speakers in the world but if your amp cant drive them properly it will sound like shit. Always match what you have. If you buy a thousand dollar amp then your speakers dont have to be all that. You putt a crappy amp to B&w's you will be ripped off.

If your gonna buy b&w's plan on spending 4k for a good amp. Your processor alone is 6k made by lexicon-Mc-1 Plan on spending big bucks just for bass. let the subs to the pounding so your channeled speakers dont work to hard. Good luck building a systemn is alot of fun and takes thousands of dollars and time. I spent 12k just on subs and cooper cables.

Just placing your subs is a project in itself let alone tesing acoustical feedback for placement of speakers and setting milli seconds. It's a sickness for me when it comes to this I love it. ICQ me if you need help here are some links.. You have to tewll yourself what you can afford then go by that. Under 2k just go to best buy.

lexicon.com-processors
sunfire.com-subs/amps
Klipsh kicks ass for the money and is perfect for Home theatre.

Grab two of these

Grab 4 of these

Grab 4 of these

You will have full range audio. Get a good center and 2 side channel hanging klipsh and your rocking.

My system is 9 channels

front right
front left

center

right rear
left rear

right center
left center

Subs which are amplified already.
couch channel for installing vibrating modules in your couch.

Good Luck SNOW

My bro, myself and a few friends once built a subwoofer using a 45" speaker we, uh, liberated from a largely unused (great rationalization..) church organ.

Not only did we build a plywood box for it, we mounted that fucker iin the trunk of my friend chris' Volkswagon Jetta. I don't remember the wattage, but this was back when "booming" cars were coming into fashion, and he had a very high powered stereo system in there to begin with.

We put this album called "Bassenthrobulation" in the CD deck and cranked the volume. Holy fuck! It wasn't pretty, but my god.. it was one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard. We thought the damn car was going to come apart...

I listened to a lot of stuff and ended up with a pair of linn speakers, which are above almost anything else out there

I would avoid bose, it's overpriced garbage, you should be able to pick up a pair of linn's for about 4K us$

Best advice is to get a hold of a number of cd's which you like and listen to regularly, pick some which are a good example of music quality in the theme, and then bring them with you

Most important speaker investment probably is a top of the line subwoofer, which you'll need for DVDs -don't look at anything under 12"

For surrounds, check out the AIM series, inconspicous and adjustable for your room's accoustics, you can pick some great surrounds for about $4-6K for four speakers

Ultimately, it's all going to fall on your amps,
good amps will cost you $5-25K

You don't have to spend a fortune at all. It all depends on your "needs" and your budget. You can get great sound from a complete set of Klipsch (2) front floorstanding, (2) rear floorstanding, (2) additional surround for rear center, (1) center and (1 or 2) subs. Reference series or Synergy work very well. Est cost depending on level of speakers could be anywhere from $4K to $8K. You can also go with almost any major brand (Polk, Infiniti, B&W...whatever. Go check out all of them and make you own decision. You'll know what you like when you see them and hear them for yourself. Now go spend some $$$$$$ and let us know what you end up getting.

Those absolutely rock! Truely great sound does not come cheap for sure. A room full of B&W's is not cheap by any means. Like I said, it all depends on how deep your pockets are or how much debt your willing to go into for the home theater.
