Full video in progress. It ended up being 35 gigs of HD that had to be uploaded to a server for someone to download and encode for web, so it's a bit painful getting it done. Soon though! ColinComment

We had a representive speak at the Trade Ass in London.
The guy did not seem to be a full speed at what their plans really were with confused answers to whether content would be controlled...
In his opening speech he attacked porn for being full of viruses, spyware pop ups etc...
XXX would clean this up and make it safe for the consumer.
Was he proposing to control and monitor all content on XXX domains? He did not know.
The high cost of the domain $60 wholesale was to cover the cost of policing the area.
so yes ?
Who would decide what was legal? and how is it possible when laws are national and the web international? Again he was clueless.
How would any of this make sense if adult sites can still exist on any other com, org, info etc..
In fact it would be the easist to shut off his sites, everyone will know to ban XXX.
If it is just a busines man taking common property and scaring people into buying what they don't need or want, it will fail in the same way as org, net or info are not needed.
Only if powerful states on an international level try to force the movement of 100,000 of domains into XXX will it be really worrying. I see a lot of practical problems for the lawmakers to do this...I don't think we should help them by buying XXX....
Just buying XXX domains at such I high price will give them a large warchest to make the problems worse.

If western countries were to all require webmasters use .xxx to remain compliant then a money hungry developing country would likely welcome the new business.
WORST CASE you end up on their extension rather than xxx and have no regulatory panel.

Keep the ball in the air, gents! Vimeo is now transcoding the 2 hour and 15 minute video of the phoenix forum seminar (so refreshing to be able to have something that isn't porn to run through cool mainstream tech). I'll post it up here the minute it goes live so everyone can see the "festivities" (and maybe stop talking about roofing? I know where you are at. Cross sales. Let's be clear, I understand your insistence that this is a business and you run your business to make a profit. As I said a few posts ago, I don't give a fuck. But.........if you were as successful with your program as you would like everyone to think you are you wouldn't be relying on cross sales for income.
But that's neither here nor there. Personality, or lack of one, aside you run a small program and are still in business when other small programs have failed. I expect you to be here and in business five years from now. Dunno what this roofing thing is about but don't care about that, either. Business is business.
As to the story everyone knows, you asked. If you didn't like the answer that's up to you.Comment

Okay, in the spirit of keeping the ball in the air while we wait for Vimeo to finish encoding (OMG! it is my 53rd birthday in 42 minutes! how fucked up is this that I am killing time waiting to post when it is ready?), here's my past pedigree of jobs over the years.....
Undertaker's assistant and hearse driver (high school job)
Public Radio night shift personality/D.J (college)
Baker in a communist worker's collective health food bakery in Ann Arbor (college)
English translation style editor of Pravda anti-american and israel brochures while a student in Moscow in the late 1970's (hey. it paid for black bread and vodka!)
Pit orchestra director off broadway for musicals and really bad experimental productions - early 1980's (after I got back for Moscow Conservatory with a doctorates in music on a Fulbright scholarship. A long and strange story there involving Jimmy Carter)
Dry cleaner of fine Persian Carpets in New Jersey in-between pit orchestra conducting jobs in NYC (early 1980's as well)
Apprentice Wooden Boat Carpenter on Cape Cod for a couple of years as income while trying to start a 16th century renaissance dance band south of Boston (sort of like roofing, but earthier? Actually, boat carpentry is more like "siding".)
Grant writer for Goodwill Industries of America (late 1980's) to get funding for chronic schizophrenics placed in community housing and jobs bagging groceries at a SafeWay near you!
Music Director for the Boston Lyric Opera Company (http://www.blo.org/) for most of the 1990's though 2004, while, at the same time in the later years, starting a porn company!
Lots more little jobs scattered in there. As a musician, that sort of "just happens" to pay the rent.
Oh yeah. I also have done my share of nail banging on construction crews, siding and (GASP!) roofing over the years! ROLF.
Cheers,
ColinComment

The best thing that could happen when this xxx shit goes through it so have a bunch of gtld's go through, so it not only devalues xxx, but also makes it a lot harder to "round everyone up".
.gay would be cool for gay sites.
.cam would be cool for cam sites
.date for dating
.sex
etc..
But Greg Dumbass thinks everyone would go ape shit if that happened, because you need to protect your trademarks LOL like there isn't already several tlds now that people could buy your trademark, so what if there is a couple more. So what if there is 55 vs 50. Moron.ICQ: 86364801 Email: will [at] innovativeassets [dot] com

actually watched/listened to the whole vid and came to the conclusion .xxx doesn't fucking matter unless you've got a brand to protect. And then you can just sue anyone else registering your TM. Just like any other extension....
sooooo whats the point of .xxx again? Why do these large companies give a damn anyway, surfers know .com is king and thats the reason why every other extension ever (.biz, .mobi, etc) have completely flopped. Who cares if some seo wiz kid drops the $70 on your .xxx extension, they probably registered the .org and .biz 3 years ago anywaySupComment
-
I think what troubles a lot of people are the unknown answers to the "what if" questions, many of which still linger about .XXX now that the contract between ICANN and ICM has been signed.actually watched/listened to the whole vid and came to the conclusion .xxx doesn't fucking matter unless you've got a brand to protect. And then you can just sue anyone else registering your TM. Just like any other extension....
sooooo whats the point of .xxx again? Why do these large companies give a damn anyway, surfers know .com is king and thats the reason why every other extension ever (.biz, .mobi, etc) have completely flopped. Who cares if some seo wiz kid drops the $70 on your .xxx extension, they probably registered the .org and .biz 3 years ago anyway
A few examples:
* What if VISA decides that it is only comfortable with processing charges for adult sites that are located on .XXX (hey, unlike .COM porn sites, .XXX sites have "best practices" and a "policy board" after all...) and announces that they will no longer allow payments to .COM-based adult sites?
* What if use of .XXX by adult webmasters/companies becomes mandatory under the law? (Sure, First Amendment precedent makes that very unlikely to occur in the U.S., but what about in other countries that don't have the equivalent legal protection under their national laws/constitutions?)
* What if in blocking .XXX sites, governments and/or other institutions inclined to do so decide that if they find a .COM site with the same brand name as a .XXX they are already blocking/filtering, they should go ahead and block/filter out the .COM equivalent, as well?
* What if IFFOR decides to restrict certain types and categories of content (like, say, bondage scenes that also include penetration), what effect could that policy have on obscenity prosecutions of that same sort of content within the U.S.? Imagine a prosecutor saying "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this man's content is so far out there that .XXX, the official sponsored top-level domain of the adult entertainment industry, does not even allow his content to be displayed on that TLD; what does that tell you about whether his content should be considered acceptable by your community's standards?"
That's just a handful of the questions that have been bouncing around the brains of the bigger companies when weighing the potential pros and cons of .XXX. In other words, branding is a concern, but it is far from the only concern.
I'm no psychic, so I don't know what any of the answers to those questions will be. The primary reason I opposed the creation of .XXX is that I preferred to continue on doing business as usual without having to find out the answers to those questions, quite frankly.
In other words, the TLD status quo with respect to adult sites suited me just fine, so the chance that .XXX would turn out to be a good thing wasn't worth the risk that it might turn out to be a disastrous thing.
Does that make sense?Q. BoyerComment
-
Sure I agree 100% with you. And I have no plans to use .xxx, I primarily do seo and run smaller sites were branding doesn't matter
.xxx just seems to be targeted at big brands where a domain cost is pretty minor in the scheme of things, its just everything else related to .xxx is more of the concern.
.xxx offers nothing to people that play the seo game, no age, a lesser extension and wildly more expensive then everything else. So there is absolutely no reason why I would bother spending $70 on a .xxx domain when I could just spend $70 on a quality .com dropping domain or buy 10 fresh .coms or .nets.
I have no idea how many domains topbucks and other large paysite oriented companies register, but compared to a % of their revenue it seems pretty minor compared to blog people. Other then that I guess its just speculatorsSupComment

This makes me want to vomit. Especially the ending section where she claims .XXX is taking a "proactive approach" ... yup, proactively going for your wallet. Or else.
Dumas made two IMPORTANT mistakes in that video...
1) He mentioned they WILL be monitoring all sites when he talked about malware and viruses.... so yes, looks like they have every intention of spidering your sites, unless you know some other way for them to do this.
BUT FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY....
2) He mentioned they would implement "RESPONSIBLE BILLING SYSTEMS." If you don't hear anything else in that video ... hear THAT shit. Sounds an awful lot to me like they'll be making special deals with certain billing companies, either right out of the gate or later on down the line. And it sounds to me like those who want to use their own merchant accounts have a LOT to worry about here.
Bottom line... control the MONEY and you control the industry.
These domains are DANGEROUS and anyone who develops on them deserves their fate. Let's hope the rest of us don't get forced into it too.Comment
-
This was brought up at the seminar in Phoenix. So not only do they probably want to control your billing options, it seems, but looks like your traffic is in play too. If they control your warning page, does anyone think they will NOT use it to link to shit of their choice? "Child protection" organizations or anyone else they want to promote? I assume they're salivating at the traffic potential of adult sites being forced to promote something.
And keep in mind... if they're smart they won't require any of this shit right out of the gate. They'll wait a few years until you think .XXX is safe and you have spent money marketing and getting links all over the place, and THEN they'll announce the unpopular rules.Comment
