yes that happens quite frequently, sometimes when we shoot solo videos we have the girl do one with the video camera on a tripod.. girls seem to really like it and clients love it as well.
sometimes just the opposite..
i was shooting photos of a really hot latina from san diego, we went to blacks beach thinking it would be easy to knock out some nude sets there.
its a nudist beach, and unlike european nude beaches.. american nude beaches is a freakin sausage/sword fest.. in no time were we surronded by a swarm of nude swaggering guys.
kinda freaked me out but she was loving it.. and pics came out very well, some were published in a couple mens magazines.

Looks to me like it was a workshop type situation....that's why all those people were standing around. I had 15 people standing around at my workshop a few weeks ago, all staring at the model. Nothing unusual.....

I would have done this all different. wow....

There is a great diffuser above the model to diffuse the main light " SUN "

I would have had the reflectors behind the model to key her hair from both sides and one reflector to fill her just enough to match the background exposure.

In this photo the back ground will be washed out as they attempt to shoot this model.

hey Dean, i've noticed you use a similar screen over the top of your model when shooting outdoors, if you don't mind, what's that called and what are the benefits of that?

so how would you go about that? get an exposure reading without the reflectors on the model, then a reading with the reflectors?

just meter the back ground, you can do that easily by using the TTL meter built into most SLR cameras, then adjust your strobes to match those settings.

the shade held over the model is a LOUCHE, you can buy it with varying F-stop, meaning one type will lower the ambient light with 1 f stop, another only 1/2 f stop and so on.
problem is this product is darned expensive..

It is also a called a California Sunbounce or scrim used to diffuse light.

I would have used the Scrim/diffuser above the model the same with one huge white reflector far away from the model to light her more evenly,
and used the small reflectors behind to bounce bright light back into her hair as hair lights. - All natural light control, no strobes.

Most often I use a black 9' X 9' to put the model in shadow. This will knock the harsh sun from her body and allow me to light her body the way that I want to light it. I'll throw in a mainlight and a few accents and make sure it balances up nicely with the background and we're off and running. I use black because we are mainly shooting in the middle of the day and the light is very harsh. If it were early morn or late evening, I'd use white translucent or nothing at all.

Dean's and my light set up are a lot a like, with the exception I mainly use natural light.

My set up when I use strobes:
One to two main lights "feathered" to be more even and slightly softer
Back hair lights with different colored gels to separate model from back ground and great highlights in the models hair.
background lights to ad depth dimension and color to sets.

It can get very complicated: Snoots, barn doors, grids, grid spots, gels, diffusers and much much more.

I am going to start using more strobes now that I am getting away from the FTV look.

I have a lot of expensive Profoto gear that I need to start using again. LOL

always Sekonic L358 and my white balance target

you should stick to what you are good at, and that is the natural light from what i have seen of the stuff you posted here..
most photographer get into a groove, they have a hard time to really change styles.
Deano is best when he controls everything and have lots of lights and scrims etc kinda playboy style i guess.. but his natural light stuff is not as good as your or Robs (imho).

Wow... naw I can do anything another human can with in my physical capabilities.
I have no excuses like most humans create.

If a great shooter like Dean or another can shoot something I can reproduce the same exact style just the same.
That is what you would be directed to do in a real photography class/school.

I also shoot many different styles.. trust me on that

I am 100% self taught, I watch a few other shooters here and there just like my guitar playing 100% self taught.
I listened watched Eddie Van Halen play, took what I needed from his playing style and moved on to the next great guitarist to learn from.
Eddie never sat down with me and showed me anything, I had to work for it myself. Same goes with photography.

A true artist can NOT be taught art, art comes from with in.

Eddie, no doubt some people are gifted in certain areas, and most often less gifted in other areas... which is why some are brain surgeons, some are programmers and some are just plain nutz

You are right.. however everyone can be a nut from time to time, it's all about perception.

In order to be able to accomplish something that has been set with difficult and extreme standards, one must change his belief system from "I can't" to " I can and will " to execute his or her goal.

Photography is NOT Brain surgery, as I said within my physical capabilities (I can NOT bench press 400lbs)
I can however move lights around very effectively and efficiently..lol
Oh I can photoshop very well too hee hee

So stop with the excuses and get'r done!

No no, this is not how I do my regular shooting. I will not share my real secrets for free.

To use all natural light gorilla shooting is another ball game my friend, trust me on that.
Shooting a girl flashing and masturbating on Mill ave or in public is NOT an easy task
All the photos you see so far have been done with this style. Gorilla shooting = in and out, but knowing the light and how to make it look great all in one.

I was shooting natural light years ago - way way before we knew each other. It was fun at first but quickly became boring. After I figured out a few basic lighting principles, natural light shooting just wasn't a challenge to me anymore. I then set my sights on learning more complex lighting setups and that was when I REALLY began to love photography. Not to knock those who shoot with natural light .... but for me it just became boring and not challenging enough

It's like being a pilot. Most pilots start out learning to fly a single engine plane. Some of them decide they want more of a challenge to they start learning to fly twin-engine planes and even go on to learn to fly jets. There are some who are happy to fly the single engine plane for the rest of their lives and then those who want to learn more, grow more and challenge themselves more. That's the category that I'm in

By the way, your advice to Eddie to ... "stick to what you are good at" - I would disagree with, unless he's "only" interested in a paycheck and not improving his photography. I always encourage experimenting and testing new lighting setups and post-processing methods in an effort to grow. The real challenge here is finding clients that support your experimenting and testing and who aren't going to shit their pants when you turn something in that they find less then appealing. Because when you're experimenting and testing, not all of your work is going to set a new standard. Unless your clients support you in this, you'll find yourself kicked to the curb

I use black because we are mainly shooting in the middle of the day and the light is very harsh. If it were early morn or late evening, I'd use white translucent or nothing at all.

I agree and its great that I have my wife that can model for me as a muse that I don't have to pay.

Oh I can move furniture. It's the whole "photography" thing that I need help with.

Since you left your furniture that way, I'm beginning to wonder if I should consider interior design as an alternative career move.

you know that is not what i meant, that quote was taken out of context.
whether you are a singe engine or multi engine or jet pilot at some point you have tried them all and settle on one of them as your preferred "medium"
many photographers consider natural light to be the odium, perhaps they have made full circle i dont know... any case Eddie's natural light stuff looks great.. we both know how difficult it is with digital, not the same dynamic range as film. highlights blow easy, especially when there are sun streaks on the model and shadows on the other side..

experimenting is great, i agree..i did alot of experimenting initially, now not so much, i think its like finding your "home", sure different style is fun but most often time is spent doing what you do a little better each time.

agree you need supporting clients, and on more than one occasion have i commended on your "experimental" photos, think i even said great to see Deano shoot something different..

That looks like a lot of work. I like just using an on-camera flash and call it a day.
