Both networks have big problems, but then again, all big telecom companies have problems of one sort or another.

For example, global crossing's peering policy is among the most strict. I don't know if it's still the case, but for a while, it was so strict that their only peering with MFN was in LONDON! (because their policy was less strict there).

Verio, their network has lately been rapidly deteriorating, and having lots and lots of major outages at various parts of their network. They are known to make networking decisions that are extremely stupid (eg, installing new router software on all of their backbone routers simultaniously and rebooting them all at once.

Well on that level you don't need to worry about "the best bandwidth" really as much as you need to worry about the specific hosting companies implmentation of that bandwidth.

Level3, UUNET are touted as "cream of the crop" for Tier1 providers - for what thats worth.

Don't expect to get rock bottom pricing with proivders using a heavy share of Level3 or UUNET though.

You want a host that has multiple carriers, and has full-time connectivity from all of them, and capacity for failure of a circuit.

I recommend ISPrime.

Fixedorbit is far from being perfect, but it's a decent test if you don't know much about advanced networking.

Someone who was trying to sell me level3 bandwidth was telling me how great they are compared to the rest.

Its nice to see some people who aren't trying to sell me something concur with that.

Anyone know of a resource site or something similar where you can read up on network comparisons and such?

look for an host that uses internap routing.

from my tests it is fastest and most reliable overall.

but, not the cheapest

About internap.

Their service is good, I won't deny that, but the problem with them is that they announce to many uplinks which are all transit, they don't have their own network (that's their philosphy). The problem with that is that if they ever do flap (and all networks do sometimes) there can be enough routing changes in a short time to cause them to be dampened, which will lead to about an hour of partial reachability to the internet.

Nonetheless, a decent service.
