Domain name advice [SEO]

Should we try to avoid hyphens in domain name? Are they not good and may affect traffic?
While registering your domain name and still get a unique name for your domain.

How important the hyphens are?
Should use it or not? Try to avoid?
Thank you.

hyphens are OK with the search engines, not so great with users.

No hyphens... Unless your analysis shows that you can rank high with a version with hyphens.

you can make anything rank if you build quality, with that said I would stick to .com and avoid hyphens.

When using a hyphen domain you run a huge risk of traffic leakage to the non-hyphen version of your domain. If you can live with that then go for it. Personally I wouldn't.

I would only do it if you had both names link FreePorn.com and Free-Porn.com

Or some asswipe is sittnig on FreePorn.com with it just wasting away with a parking page.. Then you might as well go for the hyphen since it's not competing with you anyway.

I try to avoid hyphens whenever possible. Maybe it's just me but I've never had much luck getting domains with hyphens to rank well.

Choose a BRANDABLE name instead and pour in your time and effort in structuring the site correctly and getting your visitors to SPREAD THE WORD.

If this is for mainstream: if you want KILLER content, email [email protected]

A website wont rank on the 3 major search engines for Free Porn, simply because the domain is Freeporn.com or Free-porn.com where ever there is high volume request keys and saturation that is. Duh!

I'm in the process of optimizing a website for a client that has 2 very strong keywords separated by a hyphen. Personally, I'm not a hyphen fan and at first i thought it wasn't a good choice, but that is more a matter of personal taste and practicality besides any uncertainty about what benefit you might get from having so many hyphens. The bottom line is that hyphens are treated by Google/Bing just like word separators, the don't certainly hurt and wont slow down your seo process, but they don't help.

and i read this...

"Hyphens? – Another eternal debate with domain names is over the value of hyphenated names. For example a hyphenated version of this blog might be Pro-Blogger.net. There are a two main reasons that some people prefer hyphenated names:

* Availability - one of the main reasons for going with hyphens is that ‘all the good names are taken’ (or at least it can seem this way). Adding hyphens to names definitely gives more options.
* SEO – hyphens are said to identify keywords to search engines more clearly (once again there is some debate over this)."

Really don't know what now...

Google treats . (dots) and – (hyphens) as a space...
