Google destroys advantage of KEYWORD DOMAINS? (video)

Another week, another funky Matt Cutts video. In this video he tackles the question of "Is there an SEO advantage to registering domains that have your keywords?"

Quote:
Now if you are still on the fence, let me just give you a bit of color. that we have looked at the rankings and the weights that we give to keyword domains, & some people have complained that we are giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. So we have been thinking about at adjusting that mix a bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm, so that given 2 different domains it wouldn?t necessarily help you as much to have a domain name with a bunch of keywords in it. ? Matt Cutts
This might get people to get up and exert a little bit of extra effort in optimizing pages on keyword domain sites instead of just letting the domain do the heavy lifting.

If you have thelatestmusic.com and it's all about indie music and has the most traffic, backlinks, etc. in the indie music genre, I don't think you need to worry about indiemusic.com with their 3,000 daily hits grabbing your spot.

Edit: I totally went in the wrong direction with my point. But fuck it lol.

I decided to take the long road with my online store, choosing branding over a domain with my keywords. I was using the theory that as long as I am working everyday, building quality links etc in the end I will outrank my competitors. 6 months in, Im almost there.

Why should the domain matter anyways? Its the content, the user experience, and relevancy that should matter right?

Google's Minister of Propaganda spewing some creative word play "we have looked at", "we've been thinking about", "wouldn't necessarily help as much". Then some blathering on about the benefits of brandability that everyone knows already. As far as I can tell, he spent 3:03 saying absolutely fucking nothing in that video. Nowhere does he say they actually have done anything beyond considering, nor does he say anything about destroying or nullifying the metric in the algorithm. At most he said "we've considered turning it down a little bit". I wouldn't expect keyword domains to lose their value any time soon. At least not to anyone who has a well rounded SEO game anyways. Otherwise I'm aiming to rank nigggerdick.com for "easter bunny" before the holiday season rolls around...

He talks like a politician for 1 purpose only--it gives big G an escape hatch. It's also quite obvious that socialized (not caffeine type updates but full on socialized domain ignore feedback mechanisms) feedback may factor in G SERP results in the near future. I wonder how he'll spin that one.

yeah I am working on traffic to a mainstream domain right now, and while it has started getting hits for searches of the domain name (variations of the two words), I wish the other kw hits would start coming in.

So this is what he is talking about... nice.

Liar. Matt Cutts has clearly stated that Google is stopping spammy sites. Keyword domains are worthless now, you only have one direction to move, and that is down...

You guys obviously didn't watch the same video as me.

He said "it is defiantly possible to rank without keyword domains." Think carefully about his words. To me he is basically saying that while Google prefers branded domain names and that end users will probably like your site better and remember it more with a brandable domain name.

We have been THINKING about turning the knob down on that algorithm. Didn't say they were going to or that they have, but they were THINKING about it.

So really what did Google destroy? Nothing. They put a lot of mis-information out there all the time and this is just another perfect example of that.

In short they want us to use real domains. Great. But it doesn't change the fact that having a keyword stuffed domain name helps with rankings.

he said:

you don`t need a em domain to rank.

and they were THINKING about adjusting the weight for em domains.

another spamalicious thread that has nothing to do with the actual content posted in order to get views.

It's Matt Cutts job to continuously confuse the fuck out of the SEO community. Why anyone listens to the shit he spouts, or how they take things he says so literally is beyond me. You're almost better off to pretend he doesn't even exist. Telling the webmaster community that keyword domains aren't going to help anymore is probably just as effective for Google at this point than actually making them less effective, lol...

Matt Cutts is being paid by one of the wealthiest internet companies in the world to make sure that SEO "experts" can not figure out exactly how to manipulate search engines, mainly google. He may throw out a little rib bone but the profitablility of his company will make sure no one get's the whole cow.

If you own bigtits.com and want to rank for "big tits" bigtits.com is still the best domain to have. Maybe they will turn the weight down a notch but starting out there is no better domain you can have than the exact keyword .com if you want to rank for that term. hyphened .info domains is a different matter

The SEO arguments crack me up every time. Half the world thinks the sun rises and sets on it, the other half thinks it's a disaster because of threads like this and the "how can I make it work for me" game that gets played.

Maybe spend less time worrying about what Google's doing in their backend, and more about building sites and content people want, and it will come. That's the shortest version of it all and Google's main driver: deliver content that its users want.

Not what webmasters think is cool, not ways around the system - just make quality and work on taking care of the users you have and those you get.
