Japan is about to release radioactive air from the Fukushima nuclear power plant

At the Fukushima No. 1 power plant the backup cooling system has failed. 1000s have been evacuated. Temperature is rising in the cooling tanks and to alleviate the pressure they are about to release contaminated, radioactive air. The headline may be a bit sensational but it says, "Fears nuclear reactor will explode as 'out of control' cooling system fails at plant."

The 'danger' at the nuclear power plant has been up and down all day.

That firball from the refinery was something else. It was fucking huge. Pity the camera ma was zoomed right in on it when it went up.

We're even helping bring in coolant to basically dump on the entire building. Let's hope our caution is greater than the actual threat for once.

The measurement of earthquakes size you mean?

Japan uses a different system I believe and it only goes up to a 7.

err yes, sorry

i was speaking about the Richter scale, not aware of the japanese form of measurement. I wish i could find the reference, but it was basically saying anything over 8 would be slightly outlandish, and over 9 just for 'reference'

there have been 9 quakes in Alaska.
I believe the nuke plants have been designed to withstand more than a 9.
lets hope they get it under control or shut down safely.

It costs between $10 BILLION and $20 BILLION to build 1 Nuclear Power Plant.

That's a million wind mills per power plant, per 10b spent or one is equal to covering over 10% of America's highways in solar power panels strong enough to handle cars and produce enough power for all of America at a fraction of the cost.

One melt down, costs more than any amount of wind mills could drum up.

Um... sorry, but I call bullshit. CNN is reporting a completely different story.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapc...ex.html?hpt=T1

Quote:
Earlier Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama said that Kan told him there had been no evidence so far of radiation leaks from nuclear reactors because of the earthquake and tsunami.
Quote:
"When they shut down reactors, it takes a long time for them to go down," Dallas said. "It does not necessarily mean radioactive material got out of the reactor."
While authorities are "bracing for the scenario," the minister said, "At this moment, there is no danger to the environment."
Fuck "DailyMail.co.uk" for spreading this shit and making it sound worse than it is. Isn't this site owned by good ol' Rupert Murdock?

Do you have any idea the cost of the concrete and lead to build a plant? The man power? Once those windmills and solar panels are up its just maintenance crews compared..

Plus saving a few bucks today versus tons of bucks long term is not smart math anyway.

Why dont we just stop GIFTING oil companies our tax money and INVEST it instead in wind and solar and geo and tidal? Because politicians only want to take on things they can complete and reap rewards for during THEIR term of office, thats why. Greedy fucks. Thats why it's easy to ban smoking, but impossible to broach the subject of dirty vehicle emmissions. Hey, put out the cigarette while my child stands inches from a spewing exhaust pipe. NO SMOKING in this public playground! Parking is ample. Black is white and up is hamburger.

Carry on.

from msnbc
Hours after the evacuation order for those within a two-mile range of the plant in northeastern Japan, the government announced that the plant will release slightly radioactive vapor from the unit to lower the pressure in an effort to protect it from a possible meltdown.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the amount of radioactive element in the vapor would be "very small" and would not affect the environment or human health. "With evacuation in place and the ocean-bound wind, we can ensure the safety," he said at a televised news conference.

This is scary stuff, I know they look into alot of scenarios when they build these plants but an 8.9 earthquake followed by a tsunami is something not many can plan for.

man, there's so many possibilities... read about it

instead of subsidizing electric companies so that they can produce cheap nuclear power and leave the public with the costs for getting rid of the toxic waste you could invest in exploring about a dozen of renewable energy sources starting at small block heating stations up to offshore windparks etc.

CNN must have been listening to Hillary Clinton too much. She is the one that said we were rushing coolant to them. A nuclear reactor is cooled with water.

From the Washington Post:

Quote:
In a statement that confused nuclear experts, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday morning that U.S. Air Force planes in Japan had delivered "coolant" to a nuclear power plant affected by the quake. Nuclear reactors do not use special coolants, only large amounts of pumped water.

"They have very high engineering standards, but one of their plants came under a lot of stress with the earthquake and didn't have enough coolant," she said, "and so Air Force planes were able to deliver that." It remained unclear what the Air Force had delivered.

Why not? The zone is known for major earthquakes. They had one in 1933, too.

Japanese authorities and the U.S. military on Saturday were racing to find ways to deliver new backup generators or batteries to a nuclear power reactor whose cooling facilities have been crippled by a loss of power as a result of the earthquake.

The reactor, owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co., is currently drawing on battery power that may last only a few hours. Without electricity, the reactor will be unable to pump water to cool its hot reactor core, possibly leading to a meltdown or some other release of radioactive material.

Japanese authorities informed the International Atomic Energy Agency's Incident and Emergency Center that they have ordered the evacuation of about 3,000 residents within a 1.9-mile radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, and told people within a 16.2-mile radius to remain indoors, according to the IAEA Web site.

The cooling problem is with the second of six reactors at the plant, located on the east coast of Japan about 200 miles north of Tokyo and south of the heavily damaged town of Sendai. Separately there were reports of elevated radiation levels inside the control room of one of the other reactor units, which was built 40 years ago. Sources said that the authorities were contemplating venting from that unit.
