The USA is still number 1, despite the recession and wars, because all of it's major rivals - such as China and India, started their ascent so far behind. America has so many advantages. The main one is that it is the largest english speaking nation by far - with english being the international language. Instant translation services are going to kill that advantage within 5 years.

Don't write off Japan. Their economy has been stagnating for 20 years because they don't allow immigration as a means to solving their low birth rate (unlike the US and Europe). But they have a massive lead in robotics and artificial intelligence. They are well placed for the next industrial revolution. Plus they won't be having bloody ethnic and religious civil wars in 20 years time, unlike America and Europe.

I have traveled a lot in my life.
I live in an area that is one of the most full seasoned places in the world. During the summer it gets up above 120 degrees in the shade, below freezing in the winter, every green in the spring and the fall colors compare to New England in the fall.
We have a lake with 365 miles of shoreline, we're a couple hours away from the beach, minutes from the mountains. I can play in the snow in August, I can explore caves minutes from my house that take hours. The people are friendly, the crime is low. Most here want California to split three ways and make this the state of Jefferson. Black Bart held up a Wells Fargo Stage Coach walking distance from where I'm sitting.

And if I need the big city, San Francisco and Sacramento are a day trip away. I just got back from a road trip to LA

May not be the baddest or wealthiest (although their GDP is definitely up there)
It’s a great place to live and unlike America, a country that cares about their people.

When the world was about to enter a global depression, when the credit markets were freezing around the world, where did the world rush to put their money? China? India? Russia? Norway? Canada? Nope.

Right, wrong or indifferent, it was the US Dollar and US Debt that the world fled to. Call it the lesser of evils, but that's the reality and it answers some of the moronic comments in this thread.

You are correct...and they did this because they knew that if anyone could survive a global depression the U.S. was...and is...their safest bet...as we have the largest economy in the world.
