Professional site designs...

Hey guys, just wondering what you make of these websites:

http://nikebetterworld.com/index

http://www.therestudio.com/

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/

Feedback welcome... Although these designs cater for the mainstream consumer demographic... It'd be good to get an idea of what you guys consider good designs.

If the above examples suck ass in your opinion, then grow some balls and let everyone know what you think is better.

nikebetterworld.com design looks very impressive. The high quality photographs of shoes and basketballs are very beautiful. All the products are explained in detail.

I like this quote from the web site: "Need to stop a war? Look no further than soccer. A civil war in Ivory Coast came to a cease-fire during the 2006 Football World Championship when the national soccer team progressed to the finals. Sport 1. War 0."

I did not know before that sports could cause a cease-fire.

Yeah - you can't ignore the importance of good imagery.
Everything has to be crisp as if they were near tangible.

The first one is just some fancy jquery fixed imagery. It's actually really easy to do (you can basically do it by fixing images, and setting their scroll rate to different variables). It's got some wow factor but I don't see the overall appeal for it. I've seen lots of other sites do it much more subtly which looks better imo. Giving it depth and motion, but not overdoing it.

The second one is terrible. Functionality and usability straight down the shitter. Again, I think they over did it to go with wow factor instead of better design and usability.

The third is too busy. It has more of a news site layout, and doesn't seem to work very well for what their company does.

So, for better examples/designs?

I think the nike site could have done better with a design like airwalk did http://airwalk.com

Not even going to bother wit the reststudio, anything is better than that.

For the uniqlo site: http://www.girlondon.com http://www.lifesnotfairbutmyknickersare.com or http://goseethem.com (not a store really, but it has more of a news style layout that could work well for a store)

Some people like off-white backgrounds and fancy typefaces. But really, that site doesn't even have nice typography.

Cheers dude - I know exactly how these sites are put together; but I'm sure some people will find that of interest.

I included the 2nd site in the list as a showcase piece, as it could be good for something. It's not meant to be an accessible or user friendly design... simply a tech showcase.

Really appreciate those links by the way. It gives me a good direction.
The Airwalk site is alright but I personally prefer the Nike site. Ofcourse, some of the ideas implemented on Airwalk does stoke my fire

And don't get me wrong, I do like the Nike site. They did a fantastic job. I just think they could have taken it back juuuust a little bit. Seems like they took it a few steps too far trying to impress people when they could have had the same effect using those techniques a little more subtly.

The other two sites though, meh.

Nah... I knew you were joking.

But I was serious when I said, some designers actually dig sites with tasteful typography and fewer images.
