Back in the day when the song "Rocky Mountain High" was popular, our local radio station refused to play it because of one line. "Friends around the campfire and everybody's high".

that coupled with the ominous warning that if you heard the song playing on the radio it meant you were about to die.

The words in the song were referring to Prince. Back when they came out with it i remember the controversy and talk about who they were singing about.

What always used to amuse me was the now dead current rock radio station would censor Tom Petty's "You don't know how it feels" mention of a joint, but would play buckcherry's "I love the cocaine" pretty much uncensored. Make sense of that one.

Here is a clue people: There was never any real true freedom. You have been misguided and you only believed the illusion of freedom.

The N word and Fagot are considered hate crimes in many places, hell even the word "JEWS" in Germany can land you right into prison.

Made it into the papers today:
Dire Straits censorship 'moronic'
http://www.winnipegsun.com/entertain.../16876661.html

In one of the most head-slappingly moronic moves in history, the national embarrassment that is the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has ruled that Dire Straits' 1985 song Money for Nothing can no longer be played in its original form in Canada -- because one person in Newfoundland was offended over its use of a word that starts with F, rhymes with maggot and refers to gay men.

Never mind that the song is more than 25 years old and has been played countless times. Never mind that the supposedly offensive word is as old as the hills, and used regularly on TV, in books and movies, and by pretty much every kid on the planet.

And never mind that even the most cursory examination of the lyrics -- a jab at the vapidity of music videos, as seen through the eyes of a joe-sixpack character -- makes it obvious to anyone without a head injury that Mark Knopfler is using the term in question humourously and ironically. Money for Nothing is no more homophobic than Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is a KKK manifesto. That classic novel is now facing the same sort of narrow-minded censorship south of the border over its use of the notorious N-word.

How long until Elton John's Honky Cat needs to be retitled Caucasian Cat? Or the Rolling Stones' Paint it Black gets censored? Should anyone be allowed to hear OMD's Enola Gay? Josie Cotton's Johnny, Are You Queer? Stompin' Tom Connors Moon Man Newfie?

Does all music have to be dumbed-down for numbskulls and sanitized for the humourless? Does every song ever written have to be scrutinized by a committee that tries to guess what might offend someone now, or in the future?

http://www.winnipegsun.com/entertain.../16876661.html

I think the CBSC is in for a shitstorm on this one.

I don't know any gay people (and I know many) that would support it being banned for that line. The person that is the real idiot isn't really the one person that complained (though them too) but the person that decided to take that complaint this seriously.

songs have always been edited for radio play ie for swear words and sexual content and such, as it is done in the US.

pretty sure they have always played an edited version anyways, they just fucked up and played the uneditied one, which lead to the complaint.

big fucking deal.

This is what happens when you get groups of people that want to change the world in the image they want and limit your freedom, no different are the people that want to take my guns away and the ones that want to change the wording in huck finn. Right and Left wing, they both want to make everything illegal, over 20,000 new laws this year in the US.

Do it now, it will be illegeal tomorrow!

Good move.

If they can't play the song as it was intended to be heard, it's best not played at all.

PC sucks and censorship sucks even more

That's the airplay version that most people heard, and made it to number one in the US. The entire verse is gone. It was the version released on single here in the US, and is on most of the compilations.

The MTV video has the verse, as does the original Brothers in Arms CD (where the song is over eight minutes long). What's amazing is all these people not noticing the verse was removed from the versions that got played the most over 25 years ago.

African American bird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

African American bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free

African American bird fly, African American bird fly
Into the light of the dark African American night.

That things been rewritten and censored for centuries. Old Testament vs New being the big one. Childrens bibles being another example.

It actually is a big fucking deal. A win for the cause of censorship is always a major loss for those who support freedom of expression. Certainly anyone who is actually in the adult industry or whose livelihood is aided from the avails of it should care a great deal whenever censorship scores a win.

Bid deal indeed.

a faggot is a small bundle of sticks, they should just lie and say they were talking about a small bundle of sticks..

some radio station should make a mock song called "Those little faggots" and play it 24/7 until they reverse the decision

embarassing - the gay rights groups are as upset about the censorship as anybody. not a single members of that board had any clue about the context that 'faggots' was used in in that song.

as bad as Canada is the US might be worse when it comes to censorship - Canada has a bug up its' ass about political correctness, if there's one person out there from an ethnic, relgious, sexual orientation group who might get butthurt by something everybody has to say they're sorry and it won't happen again. The US on the other hand in many states would put you in jail for producing and selling vanilla porn. That doesn't happen in Canada.
