Just like Vietnam, the wars in Iraq and Afghan were never meant to be won; by design they were meant to be sustained, that way the money keeps coming.
When one takes a closer look at the rules they have to stick to, it becomes apparent that winning isn't the plan. Once the war is won the money no longer flows at the same rate
The below is from the transcript for Zeitgeist (can easily be found on Google Video or YouTube)
In 1985 Vietnam's Rules of Engagement were declassified. This detailed what American troops were and were not allowed to do in the war. It included absurdities like:
* North Vietnamese anti-aircraft missile systems could not be bombed until they were known to be operational
* No enemy could be pursued once they crossed the border of Laos or Cambodia. And most revealing of all..
* The most critical strategic targets were not allowed to be attacked unless initiated via high military officials.
Apart from these imposed ludicrous limitations North Vietnam was informed of these restrictions and therefore could based entire strategies around the limitations of the American forces. This is why the war went on so long. And the bottom line is this: the Vietnam War was never meant to be won. Just sustained.Comment

You are probably right. I just find it quite annoying when these people who weren't even alive during Vietnam talk like they understand what the world was like then.
I bet none of them know how many draftees were killed there.

If there were not enough volunteers...then the draft would be reinstated. Eighteen year olds still have to register for the draft in the U.S...and the draft boards are still active.

If the troops are drafted then I would support them - but not always their actions. They have no choice as to whether they want to go fight or not. In that case, I'd be against the government sending them to fight, not the troops.
Right now I don't support the troops OR their actions.Comment

Whether we agree with the policies of our government is moot. It is the best thing we have going. Look at the countries around the world that don't have a government.. They have anarachy and total chaos.
Making a thread like this simply to disrespect those men and women who do believe in democracy and are willing to put it all on the line has no merit. That don't have a government? Not sure what that has to do with anything, I'm not saying we shouldn't have a government, but many nations around the world don't participate in wars and they do perfectly fine.
It is not the place of the United States to go in and tell other people what they can and can't do. You have no right being in Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other place in the world - at least just as much a right as the terrorists have to live in the US.
In case you haven't noticed, the United States spends almost as much as the rest of the world combined on their military. Why do you guys feel like you need this huge military and are always under attack while other countries live better than you guys do, don't have a military, are happier, healthier, and better educated than you guys are and they aren't always out killing people 'just because'.
The United States doesn't give two shits about democracy. All it cares about is getting what they want - no matter what it takes; even if that means slaughtering innocent women and children.Comment

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how someone can watch that youtube video. Then post it for troops, to some how state "watch this".
I'd be like me finding an article in a magazine explaining the new engine in the BMW, taking it to the BMW headquarters and showing it to the engineers of that particular engine and saying "read this".

The idea is that tons of troops are still over there, afraid to tell the truth about how they feel. interesting thread.
its always amusing to see how quickly supposedly well educated people running a successful business succumb to name calling and finger pointing like they are in the third grade...it is a sad state of affairs if all you have to contribute to any argument is a loud thumping of your chest while you point at whatever flag is yours and grunt.

another point...the only reason the guys on dirt bikes are getting away with their bullshit is the way the troops hands are tied, these guys on dirt bikes go home to their families and hide in plain sight most of the time...its war, the only way to win it is to eliminate the other side, but we are unable to commit to such an act, so instead we trade body counts, and then insult the poor kids unfortunate enough to be sent over there to fight our battles for us.

Thats not quite true. They are IN the Military by choice. But once they sign the papers they belong to the government.

1. What in the HELL were those photographers/vid guys doing in that area without first telling someone, like the military they would be there.
2. Why were they dressed in the same clothes as the " Insurgents "
3. if they were not involved why were they with guys that appear to have weapons and one sure as shit looks like an RPG.
4. What the FUCK was the guy doing peeking around the corner of a building at a Battle helicopter?
