Sure there's another way. It's called innocent until proven guilty. Right now, the US is treating everyone like as a suspect, which is a shitty way to live, if you ask me. I'd prefer to take my chances of the bus or plane getting blown up, then live in a world like that.
No, that's not really how it works. What happens is, some asshole stabs someone on a Greyhound bus, then the family members scream & holler to the media. In response, politicians jump on board to pass new legislation to make you "more secure", and score some brownie points for the next election.
Continue that cycle for a few decades, and you end up with what we have now. In the US, cops will show up at your door because you bought too much cough syrup, and they'll suspect you of having a drug lab.

Canadian airports to install full-body scanners
TORONTO ? Full-body scanners will be introduced in Canada in the wake of the failed Christmas Day bombing attempt of a U.S. airliner, Canada's transport minister said Tuesday.
Transport Minister John Baird said Tuesday 44 machines will be purchased. Twelve will be put in place later this month, and the rest will be operational in the spring.
The suspect in the failed Northwest Airlines bombing had changed planes in The Netherlands and gone through security, but not through a full-body scanner.
"Given the recent terrorist incident on Dec. 25, our government is accelerating its actions to protect air travelers," Baird said.Comment

Of course not, we had common enemies at the time. Keep in mind it's not like the USA had to twist the Taliban's arms to fight the Russians. Far from it. Remember too, this was during the Cold War and war by proxy was standard operating procedure at the time. The Taliban doesn't hate us for that.
As for the Iran Iraq war, Saddam started that one on his own and for his own reasons. The USA only came to his aid when an Iranian victory seemed likely and no one welcomed that decision more than the rest of the Arab world.
Let us not forget that Israel was created in the wake of the Holocaust. The Jews by 1945 had, shall we say, gotten the hint that they weren't exactly welcome in Europe. They were by then insisting on their own state and, except for the Arabs, the whole world - including even Stalinist Russia - supported them in this.
And, yes, the Israelis have been ruthless in protecting their statehood ever since, but given their history this should come as no great surprise.
Moreover up until 9-11 the USA frequently acted as a moderating influence on Israel. For instance, the USA on two occasions put pressure on Israel not to kill Arafat when they had him cornered first in Beirut and later in Gaza.
More like 500 years ago if I remember my history correctly. By the time British and French colonizers arrived, those states had long since passed their peak years and, in many cases, had already been colonized by the Ottoman Turks.
