Serious webmasters trade permanent links: why?

For the unpatient: a little Q&A.
Q - Productive, quality traffic?
A - Rank high in google.
Q - How?
A - Get pagerank ('PR', or 'GPR'), find keywords, optimize page.
Q - Pagerank?
A - 'PageRank Uncovered' http://www.supportforums.org/pagerank
Q - So I need to exchange permanent links?
A - Yes.
Naturally, most of you us know this and probably have read the above mentioned pdf (which also mentions plenty tips on how to keep pagerank), but what about loads of hits? "Man I Want Traffic Now ...".
Of course, but let's be honest, I'd swap hundreds of circle jerk hits anytime for one search engine user who doesn't know the first thing about large tgps, let alone kazaa lite!
