help with traffic

hey all...i'm still somewhat new to this traffic trading and affiliate stuff. Can someone enlighten me on some basic general info? What company is good to go with? I want to exchange banner links with companies. Is there a charge for that? Is that considered traffic trading?

I'm also curious about affiliate programs. Who's a reputable company to go with? How do they work? I'm trying to not get screwed. I've read horror stories were someone joined some affiliate progrm and ended up having to pay 3k to some company. Has anyone heard of that? Sorry if I sound like I'm lost or just confused the hell out of everyone. Like I said, I'm new. Thanks and sorry in advance!
