    Class C IP myth?

I am always reading bullshit replies and threads about linking sites that have the same Class C IP range or similiar IPs. THIS IS A MYTH! The only thing that matters is content... if you have a bunch of sites that are exactly the same then YES YOU WILL BE PENALIZED... but having lots of sites on the same ip does not matter. It's common.... A bunch of fake tgps are not considered duplicate content typically because if you use alt tags and rotate the galleries then it's statistically impossible to have the exact same content.

Don't believe me? Listen to GoogleGuy (Matt Cutts) tell you then.

Don't know who GoogleGuy is? Refer to google search results.

generally true indeed. you just have to be reasonable about it.

also generally true is that Matt Cutts is a GOOGLE ENGINEER! you really really really really really have to take what he says with a grain of salt. after all, he does work for Goog doesn't he?

You're making an assumption that the algo does a page -> page comparison to determine if they are duplicates. It's not so simple. Google's algo grades a page on how much of the total content is unique (i.e. doesn't show up on any other page in the database). How exactly? I'm sure Matt knows ;)

But I have read from reliable sources, like Matt, that the way of determining duplicate content is nowhere near as simple as many people believe.

As for sites on the same IP, it is potentially a problem if:

The sites are all owned(registered) by the same entity AND any one of:
          1) One or more is considered a "bad neighbourhood"
          2) They are mirror sites or close to (see dup. content above)
          3) Inter-linking in an obvious attempt to boost PR

You're right, that simply having a bunch of sites on the same C-class (or even exact same IP) in itself isn't a problem, but you have to be careful when you do it.
