I think a registered webmaster on the cheapest site will do a lot more than a simple link trade on a regular site.
For example a videochat site ( http://www.extasycams.com ) that charges members 49 cents per minute, as most of the sites are $1.20 - $5.00 per minute...
They are the cheapest in the market, so you can generate a lot more signups than a regular site. They pay 50% of every signup, so you can expect around $250/1,000 uniques sent.
A link trade will not improove your rate, just the visitors number by about 40% and you will continue to make the same $100/1,000 uniques.
