New here.. Does this really work?

I am new to this board, have been a photographer for many years and several times though about starting my own pay site.. One thing or another has always prevented it. I have been looking into the "Affiliate" concept for a few days now and as I will be getting layed off from my day job soon and my wife is prego I am very interested in getting started.

If I put 40 hours a week into it and treat it like a full time job can I expect to pay my bills?

    Thanks

      Hi
Im a newbie too. So...Does it work? The answer is... It Depends on how much of your time you invest in your sites and promote them.

You will probably need more than just one website to shape traffic to your paid websites...might also see if there are any porn bloggers or rating sites you can put your links on.

      Best of luck

Wasn't really looking to get my own pay site started at this time.. I'm more interested in the whole "Affiliate" idea. How do you get started?

Rather than try to jump in head first and run your own affiliate sites, maybe you should focus on your current skills and shoot content, and put that up for sale.

I'd think it would be faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

There's a lot to learn about promoting paysites, and there can be a lot of expense up front, and I don't know of many people that can go from zero knowledge to success in a matter of only a few months.

                          Welcom to GFY

I to am new at this. I have to agree with fusionx do what you know. I have had my site for 3 months and not one sale. You have to be able to put the time in it. It will take alot to start up and you need to be carefull there's alot of people that will take your cash and give you poor content. Do the research and do what you can your self. Congrats on the baby and the best of luck.

Thanks for the quality advice I have started a thread over in the buy/sell section asking about selling content.. How should it be packaged? What kind of release is required to be signed by the model? that kind of thing.. And then how do you find buyers and what does content sell for...

Does running an affiliate program really work? Yes. Plain and simple, a well run affiliate program can bring you untold fortune however that being said, if your website sucks then nobody will want to promote it because they aren't making any money in doing so, so you won't keep many affiliates for long. So really it's a give and take.

Yes a GOOD affiliate program can make good money but that requires not only a dedicated webmaster getting new content, but also someone to manager the affiliates and get new ones, and a skilled website designer to put together a visually appealing website that appeals to surfers.

hey welcome to the board, IMHO you can start at content selling, then paysites, and then affiliates. its like your stepping on the ladder of success :D

40 hours?? No. More like about 60 when its all said and done. And depends on the content, the designer and your skills.

I don't think he is talking about starting an Affiliate Program guys (he doesn't have a paysite yet!)- he wants to become an affiliate himself to get some cash coming in for him and his preggo wife.

My advice would be to research, research, research and then see what cheap inexpensive ways you can put a toe in the water. You can spend fortunes as a newbie affiliate on buying gallery spots, etc . . but if you don't know what you're doing you will probably lose more than you'll make.
Anyway, the answer to your question "how do I get started" is that first you sign up as an affiliate to some sponsors (look at the bottom of paysites home pages for the links to WEBMASTERS). Then you can check out their promo tools (Hosted galleries, Hosted FLVs, RSS Feeds, etc . .) to see how you can promote them.
Some cheap ideas to get you started? Well, here's a few:-
                                                    1. Become an affiliate for some niche sponsors and then post links to some of their FHGs on niche-specific forums - making sure you can make the post sound current. Cost: ZERO.
                                                    2. Start a blog. You could automate this by setting it up and going with sponsors that have morphing RSS feeds but it would do better if you hand wrote the content - depends how much time you have. Cost: just your hosting charges.
                                                    3. If the sponsor has hosted FLVs you can try posting these to legal (note that word LEGAL!!) tube sites (i.e. tube sites where you can sign up and have a banner or link back to the sponsor next to the video - which carries your affiliate code of course. Cost: ZERO.

Those are just a few to get you started but certainly don't expect a full-time income just from them - think "trickle" more than "waterfall". Some of them might work, none of them might work. Unfortunately making money as an affiliate isn't "easy peasey". You need to try things out and see what works and once you find something that works, bang it like a cheap whore - lol!
I would certainly agree with the guys on here who are advising you to go with what you know and try selling your content if you're a photographer - that's definitely a good way to start in the business too.
                                                    Good luck!

Creating your own content is much more profitable in the long run though the startup cost on that can be difficult to manage.

Affiliate sites is a great way to bring in cash with little investment upfront, though you really need to have a LOT of content to attract the traffic through natural listings. Paying for traffic can cost you far more than you make if you attract the wrong type of traffic. Beware of bandwidth fees!!! Use the hosted Videos and Pictures rather than having them on your site, otherwise you might have a excessive bandwidth fee of several thousands of dollars.

Promote your site. Find adult blogs and comment, try the social networks, craigslist, buy an ad with an adult site that you like. The more you promote the more traffic will arrive, and that is the real key for success.

Their is still room for some kinky niches.

Lets see some of that content you have accumulated through the years.

You may get some signups but do you have enough to keep them each month? To judge if your going to make it pretend to be a customer.

                                                              Here's my reality check....

You are a photographer who is good enough to make a pay site out of your work but you were not a good enough photographer to quit your day job and start your own photography biz.

I am not trying to tell you that you can't do this but switching from a 9-5 mentality to an entrepreneur mentality is really hard. Doesn't matter if its in starting an adult site, opening a bar, or building a cleaning service.

I would recommend you keeping a regular job if that's what you are used to and put all your extra time into your new business. Speaking from experience, I work about 60-70 hours per week minimum in my business and when I see someone say they are going to go at a new venture "full steam" by putting in 40 hours, I worry for them.
Sig is on vacation... (I wish I could vacation as long as my sig has...)
