In looking at other tgp's it looks like a lot of webmasters are just using text instead of thumbnails. Aside from saving bandwith, is there any reason to go this route? Is it more productive?

It may or may not be more productive. thats still an argument. But some do it for the SEO of the site.
I would go with about 60% photos and 40% text, as well as using a mixture of Revshare and PPS from the affiliate programs.

I would recommend to always keep some text for SEO on the page, and not a few words but a real paragraph.
Of course, images alt tags and image file names are considered as text by SE, but you'll have better results if you write natural language as it shows your keywords in context (and can always push a bit some keywords you were not aiming at).Comment

I have always preferred the thumbs over text but I completely agree that it would be a good idea for you to have quite a bit of text on there for SEO purposes. I say mix it up with thumbs and text.Comment

I personally like 100% thumbs... and text is for the lazy... they say its for the SEO, but its because they don't want to spend hours cropping thumbs... when you can just import a URL and description and be done with it in 5 seconds.
And the arguement that text is better for SEO is absolute bullshit too... you can SEO a thumb site as good or better than text, because you also get the added benefit of Google Images and the traffic that comes from that, if you ALT and TITLE your thumbs properly...
