Virtual Hosting - Multiple IPs?

I am very happy with my current hosting. I am using one virtual hosting account with 3 sites. Each share the same IP. I was debating if I should switch to dedicated, or get additional IP's for each domain.

Is there any reason why I should have my sites on different IPs?

Yes, I spoke to someone today about SERPs. I've been told that I wont get penalized, they just wont have any weight (internal linking)
