WP MU Question

Hi

I run a site with Wordpress MU on it with lots of subs. My question is how to get back links to each blog, what's best to do.....link directories for example is that ok?
What about linking with own subs to each other in a specific niche, is it good for SEO or does google sees it as spam or duplicate content?

Maybe you guys have some tips & tricks to help me getting the best results with a WP MU Blog
