What software do you folks recommend, or are you using, for setting up a members area on a new website. Would prefer something that is easily administrated and can be installed on a virtual host...and hopefully cheap
Fuck the software.
If you will affiliate with a Credit Card Processor ( ex:ccbill,verotel..etc) they will install free for you the members area script as well
Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. I wasn't sure if I could use CCBill or somebody, without already having something already setup. This gets me going in the right direction
...well, it seems that the billing solution has a problem associated with it. Without a members area created, they assume your website is 'under construction' and so they won't go any further. Just happened today...so I'm back to, how to setup a members area...lol.
You can get a javascript to do it, but thats without processing Credit cards, If you want processing and members area password protection go with ccbill.
go with MAS they even have our feeds pre loaded in there as an example of how to add your own feeds...
so its completely turn key.
I did a google search on MAS and I'm getting accounting software and some other stuff. Hate to be totally ignorant here, but could you give me more information? Sounds like what I need, just can't find it
CCBill, Epoch, or Verotel will provide a basic setup for people to join
and log in. It works fine to start. f you want to have an affiliate program,
where you pay people to advertise your site, CCbill will provide a basic
one which lots of people use. For a better affiliate program, look at
NATS and MAS. NATS and MAS cost a few bucks, so only get them
when you're read for a bigger affiliate program. If you didn't already
know what NATS and MAS are, you are NOT ready for them. Slow down,
save your money right now, and spend that money later when you know
the business better and know what you need to spend it on. Despite what
was suggested above, MAS doesn't have anything to do with people logging
in, really, it' s an affiliate program system, which you won't be ready for for at
least six months, probably for two years.
What's lacking with the basic log in system provided by CCBill and
other processors is any kind of security. After a few months people will
start posting user names and passwords to your site on password sites.
Also people will use programs which keep guessing user names and
passwords until they get one that works. This can be stopped with a
secure log in system. That'll run you $150 and we don't know how tight
your budget is starting out. We do know that people can;t post your members'
user names and passwords when you don't yet HAVE any members, so if
the budget is super tight put this on the calendar for three months from now
when you really need it.. See this thread: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=876712

The processor wants to see the member area and install the script. So set up your member area and put it in a folder like this paysite.com/dummymemberarea/member.html
Just make a note to the processor that when approved and setup, the directory will be
paysite.com/memberarea
raymor and Cuteshooter, thank you. That was the information I needed. I had tried to use Zamboia instead of CCBill, but I had not setup the member area correctly...I had thought I needed them to do their thing first and then move my content around, which is not correct...and then the MAS thing had just thrown me in a tailspin
I appreciate the feedback and the time-line info was helpful too.
I deal with security by using statcounter.com and if I note a spike to my member area I use the came-from to spot the site where these idiots post stolen pw/un's in the open.
