    Best WebMail Script Program?

    Greetings,

I want to offer my visitors free email accounts (like hotmail).
What is the best application/script to do that, in your opinion?
I´ve found this one, but don´t know if there are better ones:

    http://www.hivemail.com/features.html

It most not be expensive, and it must not be heavy to the server.
And it must not be very difficult to install...

I would like to put a banner on the header, and maybe a slim banner on the footer, and to know the demographics groups of my users (age and sex).

    What do you suggest?

    Thanks!

Two that I know of right off

    1. IMP Webmail: http://horde.org/imp/
    * Which couldn't be any cheaper - FREE

    2. ATPMail: http://www.atpmail.com/
    * This is a commercial product and uses perl. So it may not be the best for many users.

I've used the Single-User version of ATP and it really is quite good. You can setup filters nearly exactly the same as your Outlook express filters, etc.. Not sure if IMP has the filtering features, but it looks like IMP might be the way to go for a multi-user environment since many major Universities seem to like it for that very reason.

Post your findings, I would be curious to see which direction you go.

I had already looked at horde. Another one I found, and some hosting companies are using, is Neomail...
      Let´s dig some more...

And by the way, my University (I should have finished it, but I spend more time on my sites, than there ) uses Horde.

          Hey SxSt

Ok.. not sure which direction you're leaning towards, but just guessing from your first post that you're looking for something less server intensive. Which would probably be in the PHP/MySql category over Perl. So here's a whole gaggle of programs to choose from in PHP:

          http://php.resourceindex.com/Complet..._Based_E_Mail/

However, here's C versions of webmail proggies:

          http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Program..._Based_E_Mail/

          And then Perl versions:

          http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Program..._Based_E_Mail/

Should keep 'ya reading for a bit

Yikes It will took a while to read them. And it won´t be today. My eyes are very tired and dry.
I kinda liked Horde. Don´t know if it´s difficult to install or not...

Thanks a lot for all those links! I will investigate them!

Anyone know if the horde is easy to install, and customize (add a banner to the header, etc. I don´t even know if we are allowed to do that. I must go read their terms...) ?

Found one more for ya... and a good friend tells me this program is kick-ass:

Eheh, look at my first post. HiveMail was the one I asked opinions in the first place
Some hosters are changing to NeoMail and OpenWebMail? Are they easy to customize and admnistrate?

Oops... sorry about that one, totally overlooked the first post after we got deeper into the thread

Since my last response, I got interested in looking into these programs as well, and a friend of mine let me check out his HiveMail. And let me tell you, it's one slick piece of mail software.

It's a pretty simple install as well from what I understand - 1 MySql database, and regular PHP files. I believe you only have to modify one config file and you're good to go.

Keep us updated as I would like to see which route you eventually go with.

If you can afford the price, go with HiveMail. Your customers will appreciate and comment you on the lovely GUI.

Sorry, I´ve been away. Yeah, I guess I´ll try HiveMail
Did you know that NeoMail (very used on some webhosters) is now OpenWebMail ? Better design and filters.
My only interested is a light script that doesn´t stress the server (no bandwith hog or resources), the price of the script isn´t so important.
When I try it out, I´ll tell you my opinion about it. But GFY has so many threads that it´s easy for this one to disappear on the middle of them...
It´s better to copy the url to it

                        Thanks for your opinions!

Neomail didn't become OpenWebMail, OpenWebMail is based on NeoMail, which has ceased any updates for quite some time.

OpenWebmail is what NeoMail should have become. Of course, it's only good if you aren't running qmail on your server. I haven't found a decent webmail program that works with qmail yet.

                            Thanks for the explanation, DarkSoft

I opened this new thread. Can any of you help me?

                            "Greetings,

I want to start a webmail provider service (like hotmail) for one of my non adult sites. I need a webhoster that can handle this. I don´t know how many users I´ll have. It could be 1000 or 10.000 (or more).
Preferably a virtual hosting account or a cheap (but good) fully managed server. I just want to give this free service, not handle with server problems, reboots, backups, software upgrades or installs... I´ll just install HiveMail and run it, so I´ll need some pretty HDD space and bandwith...

If you send me dedicated server proposals, remember that I don´t want to manage the server, just to use it like a virtual account. I don´t want anything to do with PHP, Perl or Modules...
If you can get this to me, you´ll have a customer for life! I have around dozens of sites that need hosting.
Only good, reputable companies, with excellent uptime, please!"

You're not going to do that on the cheap and you won't do it without perl or php, etc, as all the webmail programs capable of dong what you want require either perl or php. You're going to burn bandwidth and you will need a decent server to keep up with the load, especially when you 1000+ users mail boxes start filling up with spam. Unless you want to invest a good amount of money on a continual basis, I wouldn't even bother with it.

I know I´ll need PHP or Perl. That´s not the problem... The problem is the possible server overload, and bandwith hog, that something like this can create.
I think I´ll outsource this That way I´ll only pay x for each email account, and no problems... it may be more expensive, but less problems will appear...
