I've been noticing alot of clients asking for the PSD whenever a design is done. Generally, i don't do this because that's a client that get's lost who will keep reusing your PSD files. When i do (rare) i usually charge double. Is this becoming common with you all also?

Question for Designers
When they kick your front door, how you gonna come? With your hand's on your head, or on the trigger of your gun.Tags: None -
I would never buy from someone who won't give me a psd file. When people design something for me, it never perfect. I will need to tweak it here and there to make it what I'm looking for.
If someone want a psd style they can google it and there's a bunch. Generally I think most people paid for time for the time spend and creativity rather than for the design style. -
I would think it's better to give them the PSD rather than follow up with them for their every edit/change to the design.Comment

before you read the rest of my post, note, I've never actually built an adult site, everything i have done to this point has all been mainstream and business (corporate)
I never provide PSDs.
I have an extremely comprehensive contract (its almost 10 pages) I have clients sign before taking on their work, 95% sign it, the other 5% sign the modified one (details below) The contract clearly states that artwork belongs to me, (in simple terms) along with any source material. the contract also states that i have the right to use their site in any promotion or portfolio promoting my work.
if a client wants the sources, I give them another contract and add a "client source termination" fee, state that if their site is modified by a third party I remove it from any promotions and portfolios.
I don't really care about anybody here complaining about my standards and practices because I'm not expecting any business coming in to my company from GFY.
My price is also a lot higher then i see posted on here.Signature coming soon! Just as soon as my first site goes live! ETA this weekend

Then why did you post? Damb french .. needlessly complicating things! I am better because I charge more.
I gotta say you must do work for extremely stupid people. I'm a designer but also a producer .. I would never let a designer set "terms" for a contract on a design or site I am paying for.
I will take input and of course rely on his expertise on design matters ... but dude works for me and if he wants to keep copies of the work (with my permission) fine. He tries and charge me for work I paid him to do ... seriously ... i'll burn him to the ground.
Oh and some one explain what a "source" .psd file is. There is .PSD file but that file wouldn't exist unless you were being paid to build it ya ... so its your clients "source" ya...
I mean do people still design entire sites in photoshop? What do you image map everything and slice it up?
If you build a site based on code ... unless you have come up with your own new code no one knows ..then really ... can't your client just view source your page and cut you out.
Oh right I got off topic source .PSD please someone show me how to write that LOL I have worked on projects in the film biz (matte Painting and such) I create PS files with 100-200 layers at sizes ranging from 500gb to a terabit for shots that are up to 15,000 pixels wide. I mention this becaue I have never in 5 yrs had anyone ever refer to .PSD other than a format. The only source in a .psd is the picture or individual layers.... you know what.... i just waisted time on this LOL all done....

PSD files are not a big deal. I have always provided them upon request and free of charge. They are paying for the design, they should own it.Comment

I also give the PSDs and fonts to the client.

Yep, when a design is done for a client the PSD is either given automatically or in my eyes should definately be given if requested. Someone charging double for a PSD file is crazy talk, i mean you've done the design because a client has come to you and said "Make this for me...." so if they didnt contact you wanting the work you wouldnt have created that PSD?
Personally I dont see any harm in providing the client a PSD after they've given me full payment.Do you need a reliable UK writer? - Contact me for more details: version5 [at] v5porn.comComment

Whomever is paying owns the content, the artwork, the ad, whatever - think of it in terms of the outiside world. You may buy a painting from an artist - who owns it? The person buying. Once the artist is paid - they no longer have claim to it.Comment
