Techie video question about on the fly Flash conversion

I have a ton of videos I want to convert to Flash for on-line streaming but right now they're all on tape or DVD. The perfect solution would be to connect a VCR or DVD player to my computer and be able to use some kind of software to capture the video to my hard drive as a Flash file. I know programs like Premiere can capture as AVI or Quicktime but then you have to convert to Flash. I'd like to eliminate that step.

Anyone know if this is possible?

means get ready for people to start bitching :p

do you have right to redistribute that content? ;)

look. HONESTLY, there is no "on the fly flv encoding" it is all done as a process.

you have 2 methods, do it on the server, and do it on your local network.

your best bet is to figuree out exactly what format/encoding/bitrate/aspectratio you want, then use a local program to queue them up and encode them, something like mplayer or mencoder or videora' software would work well.

if you NEED something serverside, i suggest you FIRST queu up locally your first batch of stock, THEN (honestly, he only way) instal ffmpeg and its libraries and plugins for server-side encoding

I'm asking this question in relation to videos that I have produced and own the rights to. Right now my process would be to capture the video into my PC editing program as an AVI file and then convert that to Flash, but I was wondering if there was a way to skip the conversion process and capture video directly to Flash.

However, now I see what you mean about people not wanting to give up this info here because it might give ideas to someone who wants to steel content so I guess I'll look elsewhere for an answer.

I don't think there is a direct to FLV method, the only way i think it would work is encoding directly to a mp4 usinf H.264 codec, then renaming that and loading it up in a flash player (flash 9 and greater which supports H264, essentially HD quality) however, Encoding to H.264 takes a long time.

I wish there was an easier way, but if there is, i do not know of it.

like i said in my previous post, encode it on a dedicated machine, if you have a spare decently fast machine lying around, format it, throw the videos on there and let it run for a week transcoding till you have all the videos done.

next best bet would be to have your server do it. your visitor will feel the hit though.

            best of luck!
