    Google SERP

    Hello,

I started to learn SEO around July 2007 and decided to start an adult site simply to see how far I can get on the Google search results for some very competitive keywords. I have a dot com domain which has 8 characters and starts with "porn". I have about 8000 backlinks from around 70 different sites, with a few PR5 and several PR4 backlinks. My homepage is PR3.

My site first got indexed in early September 2007. Suddenly about a week ago, my site started to show up amongst top 10 results for my main key phrase, which is very competitive. But it doesn't stay there. It fluctuates every few hours. It shows up around position 5 or 6 for some time, then drops to around 200, then back again to around 5 or 6. Even though this search phrase has nearly 10,000 daily searches (according to freekeywords.wordtracker.com), I only get about 100 due to this fluctuation.

What does this mean? Is Google doing some changes to it's algo, or am I doing something wrong? My site is well optimized. I use IBP and it has a 92% pass rate.

    Thank and regards,
    Mike

It greatly depends on the keyword. Very popular keywords tend to rotate the top placements and the more popular the keyword the more often that rotation tends to take place. I notice for example on one of my sites I rotate between the #2 and #3 spot for a popular porn star name. It's in a constant rotation and it has been stable like that for about 3 years now.

Interesting question and answer. I understand the whole 'rotation' theory, but rotating between place 2 and 200? The question is: What keyword(s) are you talking about?

      Bump for this thread..

I have seen such drastic extremes like this before. Okay well not 2 and 200 but but from say 5 and 40. Today #5, tomorrow #40, two days later #6 or so and then the next day it hits #30.

The 2 to 200 thing you would expect in a sand boxed site and those are typically new. But what's odd here is he says it has been indexed for over a year now (sept 2007).

One thing I can say for sure is to be VERYYYYY careful about using software like IBP or software for SEO. I can't for the life of me think of the name of the software right now but many years ago we all used this keyword software to help us with things like keyword density and it pinged the Google server to tell you where you were located at this time and kept up with it for you as you run the reports over time, so you can see your progress. I spent probably $200 or $300 on it but it was worth it as I had noticeable improvement in my sites. I got busy for about a 3 or 4 month period THANK GOD! because Google got pissy about those using it, saying it was bringing an necessary load on their servers and started banning websites using it. It's still in their TOS so do be very very careful. The last thing you want to do is piss off Google.

Top Keywords shift in position because the webs strongest search engine guys are actively "gaming the fuck out of them" You dont only have your proper, related mom and pop sites that should rank for the term, but you also have all the SEO's attempting to, and often taking those terms.

They shift lots because there is lots of action on them, there is lots of changes, every single day, every page on that "big terms" serps, has new links, new content or other factors adjusting it.

They do not "rotate" the first few spots. Google is re-factoring and re-ranking the sites based on changes or how the rest of the web compares at any given time

Thank you everybody for taking the time to comment on this issue.

ez12, the keyword I was targeting was "hardcore porn"

Kelli58, you are making a good point about being very careful when using software like IBP to optimize my site. I find Google's TOS somewhat puzzling. Google says don't use 3rd party software that would jam their servers and don't buy links. Although I have heard debates about getting caught paying for links will only devalue the link juice to flat out being penalized by Google. However, contradicting their own TOS, Google sells advertising to companies that do exactly that. For example: Do a Google search for seo software and you will see iBusinessPromoter.com amongst the top ten. iBusinessPromoter.com also appears on the right side as one of the Sponsored Links. Interestingly, iBusinessPromoter.com is a PR5 site, so Google has placed quite a bit of trust on them, even though they are in the business of selling software (IBP) that might be in violation of Google's TOS. Do another serach for backlinks and you will find many Sponsored Links from companies who sell links, which is in violation of Google's TOS. Comically, one of those Sponsored Links is isellpagerank.com, which has a domain name that itself is a violation of Google TOS, and it is a PR3 site. Now I can understand if these sites were ranking high organically. Anyone can do some smart SEO and get their sites to rank high. But these are Sponsored Links. Which means one of Google's staff went to their sites and reviewed them, and then approved them knowing very well that they are in violation of Google's TOS. This, I don't understand.

Thank you guys again, and regards.

              Mike

Interesting thread. Do not forget that SERP position depends on about 200 factors. PR is not the only one. That says Google.

Also, Google has a keyword blacklist, which includes Adult words...I always wonder what affect this has on rankings...Since Google claims to be "family friendly."

Looks like Google just updated it's PR and mine got dropped to PR2 now. But I still have the same issue. Not it fluctuates between top 10, then around 125-150.

I understand google takes into account how frequently the page changes.
Anyone have any tips for how they keep it updating daily with their keywords?

i think most people use blog software to do that now and just update whenever they have time
