I have a wordpress site that will contain a bunch of free postings/content downloads in addition to some members only content. I want all viewers to be able to read all the posts, but have certain content downloads be protected. What I was thinking of doing was putting a duplicate install of wordpress into a subdomain, like members.mysite.com, and after having the customer sign in go to that subdomain to view the site and download the content. Is this possible? How would I go about it? Obviously I would want to be able to update just the one install and have it also appear as a mirror image on the members subdomain whenever I update the regular domain.

You should be able to do this with one installation. I believe there are a few plugins that allow you to restrict downloads to certain member groups. Here is one that a quick search got me. Good luck
