Real Player 11, Flash save button

    Hi,
My client is outraged about this option when you install Real Player 11, a button/link appears in the corner of every flash video allowing users to save it. And we are talking about Members Content here.
Is there a way around this, to add an option in code so that Real Player would not generate its "addon" on a particular page?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up, I was literally having a conversation an hour ago with a girl that wanted to start doing hardcore, if it could only be streamed and not downloaded. This changes things.

It looks like this company is working on DRM for FLV files. The new Real player respects DRM content supposedly.

Here is a review about the new Real Player with some interesting facts on it.
    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...r-11-beta.html

Here is a piece of the review that might help you, if you're willing to use Quicktime instead of Flash.

"Most video files download seamlessly with no problems, but not all of them. For example, Apple's Steve Jobs keynote speeches are presented with a web link that opens the QuickTime player separately. The link itself pops up a "Download Video" button but this does not actually download the video, nor can you download it from the QuickTime player itself."

it seems like people are not really aware of this problem. Check your Flash videos if its not streaming. The thing is we never install crap like Real Player on our computer, but lots of users do this and have DOWNLOAD THIS VIDEO button right away.

      here's what adobe says about.
      kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402905

Content creators are currently able to prevent this button from appearing by publishing content as ActionScript 3.0 or by passing FlashVars to the SWF file through HTML.

Any info about "passing flashvars to swf" for FLVs?

      Thanks

Noize, The flashguru link is 2 years old. Adobe is providing DRM already for Flash. But I honestly just want this Download this video button get removed for now, until we install Flash Media Server.

          Hi Guys,

First post here so be kind. ;)

We've recently rigged one of our new tours and members area to use Flash streaming exclusively. We went for Flash Media Server 3 with the new rtmpe protocol for encryption and built-in SWF protection. Basically it's DRM for streaming flash. I've not had a chance to test the RealPlayer thing mentioned here with it yet but all other tests have shown that the stream is secure ... so far.

I can't recommend FMS3 enough, yeah it costs a bit to buy but once it's running, it's awesome. We lost a few members that wanted downloads but on the whole membership is up and more people are happy with the quality (different bitrate streams for higher bandwidth).

I'll report back on the RP issue and see if it affects rtmpe stuff too.

Just a quite reply, from the article link supplied:

Times have obviously changed, and the new RealPlayer's biggest advertised feature is the ability to save streaming video to the desktop. The neat thing is that not only RealMedia formats are supported: the player can download Windows Media Video and QuickTime streams as well. RealNetworks says that it will respect streams that make use of Digital Rights Management (DRM) schemes and not allow these to be downloaded.
            That's a good thing.

Confirmed, the FMS3 streams cannot be downloaded/saved using RealPlayer 11. However it worked for unprotected streams I found on other sites. So it would seem that Real have kept to the rules.

Ahh... great, so Real just gave Adobe sales by making people have to use FMS to protect their FLVs, and webadmins another server to buy and admin.

                  I always did hate Real.
